  • Explaining legislative party discipline in a new democracy

Mažvydas Jastramskis, Vaidas Morkevičius et al.•ARTICLE•East European Politics•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 60

We explore what factors explain the legislative party discipline in a new democracy. We choose a Lithuanian case that offers a large pool of roll call votes. We find support for the explanations calibrated for specifics of new democracy. First, overall legislative party discipline tends to increase after the period of decreased electoral volatility. Second, hyper-accountability of voters creates incentives for legislators to defect more often in …

  • The Estonian antebellum paradox

Zenonas Norkus, Vaidas Morkevičius et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Baltic Studies•2023•References: 37

In this study, we examine the mismatch between the anthropometric and the economic measures of human wellbeing, a fact that has gone unnoticed in the international research on anthropometric history: by 1914, Estonian males were among the tallest in the world despite the country’s economic underdevelopment. We explain the anthropometric overperformance of Estonia considering the early start of the first demographic transition in relation to the s…

Open Access•Vaidas Morkevičius, Rasa Erentaite et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2022

This article investigates methodological problems of measuring family wealth among secondary school students with home possessions indicators. It employs multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in order to explore (1) the dimensionality of home possessions items, (2) the nature of relationship between these items, and (3) the substantive meaning of the first and other relevant dimensions. It also employs regression analysis in order to study poten…

  • Appeals to Human Rights in the Context of Managing the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Vytautas Valentinavičius, Vaidas Morkevičius et al.•ARTICLE•Politologija•2022•References: 5

The securitization of the COVID-19 pandemic allowed governments in democratic countries to introduce extraordinary management measures that involved limiting various human rights. However, sound democratic governance always requires public debate on any policies introduced. These debates occur in multiple arenas and the parliament is among the most notable. In the context of human rights, some studies identified parliament as one of the most impo…

  • From warfare to welfare states? Social and military spending in the Baltic States 1918–1940

Zenonas Norkus, Vaidas Morkevičius et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2021

This paper provides first broad cross-national quantitative comparison of social transfers and total social spending by the central government in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in 1930 and cross-time comparative case study of social and defense spending patterns of these three countries during the entire interwar independence period. To compensate for many gaps in the available historical statistics of national income, the ratio of social to milit…

  • Relevance of American Diasporas for the Post-Soviet Economic Recovery and Growth of Their Homelands

  • Towards Rediscovery of Social Class after the Post-Communist Transition

    Open Access•Vaidas Morkevičius, Zenonas Norkus•ARTICLE•Filosofija. Sociologija•2017

Class effects in Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania are compared in the framework of the Neo-Weberian social class theory (EGP class schema), using European Social Survey (ESS) Round 4 (2008–2010) data, just at the time when Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania completed their transition to market economy and liberal democracy. Finland, perceived in the post-communist Baltic countries as a model or a “real utopia” state, is used as benchmark for a c…

  • Grėsmių Visuomenės Gerovei Suvokimas

Open Access•Irmina Matonytė, Vaidas Morkevičius et al.•ARTICLE•Politologija•2017•Cited by: 2

This article explores the phenomenon of split-ticket voting in the Lithuanian parliamentary elections. The mixed parallel electoral system, introduced into the Seimas elections with the adoption of the Constitution, is a rather favorable institutional structure for split-ticket voting behavior, as citizens are able to vote for a list of candidates of one party in the proportional constituency and for a candidate of another party in the majorit…

  • Elitų Europa

Open Access•Irmina Matonytė, Vaidas Morkevičius et al.•ARTICLE•Politologija•2015•Cited by: 1

In this article we analyze the background and extent of the Europeanness of political and economic elites in the EU member states. The focus on the elites is based on the premise that European unification is still largely driven by the national elites of the EU member states. Europeanness of the elites is defined and operationalised along the lines of emotive, cognitive-evaluative, and projective dimensions. The emotive dimension is operationaliz…

  • Šiuolaikinės Lietuvos klasinė struktūra

Open Access•Vaidas Morkevičius, Zenonas Norkus•ARTICLE•Sociologija Mintis ir veiksmas•2012•Cited by: 5

This article analyses social inequality and political processes in post-Communist Lithuania, using the neo-Weberian class theory of Robert Erikson, John Goldthorpe and Lucienne Portocarero (EGP). The opening section considers why the analysis of social structure, which was a central concern in classical sociology, has been so neglected in Lithuanian sociology since the restoration of independence. There are just two exceptions to this trend, disc…

Open Access•Irmina Matonytė, Vaidas Morkevičius•ARTICLE•Sociologija Mintis ir veiksmas•2009

One of the important constituents of common identity is a perception of the same external others as threats. Therefore, European identity construction should be grounded in similar perceptions of threats and European elites – a group having the most important influence on the construction of the common European identity – should share similar perceptions of these threats. In this study elites’ perception of 3 potential external threats to the coh…

The Lithuanian, Polish and French elites' samples, analyzed in depth, have N= 120. The aim of the study is to assess the importance of selected criteria for elites' definition of a true 'national' and of a true 'European'. The theoretical framework of the article is based on the dichotomy of national …
