‘When you live the problem, it is different’
This article analyzes the campaign experiences of eighteen candidates with disabilities in the 2021 Chilean Constitutional Convention election, facilitated by a mandatory candidate-list quota that operated alongside stronger inclusion mechanisms (gender parity and reserved seats for indigenous peoples) for other underrepresented groups. While the quota ensured inclusion in party lists, it failed to guarantee seats in the Convention, and only one …
Equality, collaboration, flexibility
Disability in the Chilean constitutional process
This article provides an overview of the constitution-making process currently developing in Chile from a disability perspective, focusing particularly on the process led by the so-called ‘Constitutional Convention’. First, we describe the measures taken to include persons with disabilities in the composition of the constitutional body tasked with writing the new constitution and how persons with disabilities could participate in the construction…
Contribution of open-ended questions in student evaluation of teaching
Student evaluation of teaching (SET) is applied in the vast majority of universities and higher education institutions. They are used to design professor training programs, evaluate teaching performance, and show evidence of performance to different stakeholders. SET surveys typically include an open-ended question which is not always considered in the analysis of the results. This study aims to show the contribution of analyzing the students’ co…

The overprotection of conscientious objection in Chile’s abortion regulation
This paper critically analyses conscientious objection to abortion in the context of the new regulation of pregnancy termination in Chile. It argues that adequate regulation should not be blind: The bioethical requirements that seek to balance the interests involved must consider the legal regulation of the interests at stake, the context in which they are implemented, and, fundamentally, the effectiveness of the solutions adopted. Attention shou…

Voting from prison
This article critically analyses and discards two democratically justified cases for the disenfranchisement of prisoners. These cases are offered in relatively recent published works by Peter Ramsay and Claudio López-Guerra, which – unlike other approaches – take the democratic challenge to disenfranchisement very seriously. Their arguments are based on a diagnostic of the conditions of imprisonment, which concludes that prisoners’ electoral part…
