  • Relocating Syncretism in Social Science Discourse

Anita Maria Leopold, Jeppe Sinding Jensen•CHAPTER•Syncretism in Religion•2016

Syncretism is considered a pejorative term in some quarters today; cer-tainly it acquired deprecatory overtones in the past, and these negative associations have caused anthropologists to doubt whether the term can or should be used in current writing. The first issue to consider is which histories and which regional ethnographic traditions, if any, anthropologists should feel themselves governed by.

  • Syncretism in Religion

Anita Maria Leopold, Jeppe Sinding Jensen•BOOK•Syncretism in Religion•2016

Syncretism - the fusion of different beliefs into one religious system - has long been controversial in scholarship. It is widely held that religion, culture and ethnicity are pure entities that may become mixed in encounter and lead to impure, hybrid forms. Some important selections appear here in English for the first time. Also …

  • Synkretisme

    Open Access•Anita Maria Leopold•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2002

On the basis of the notion of syncretism this article discusses the issues of constructing new religious identities in the history of Christian mission. ‘Syncretism’ represents one of the more controversial categories in the study of religion that have been exposed to solid scholarly critic, partly because of the notion’s problematic situation in the history of Christian mission. In spite of the problems of definition ‘syncretism’ may function as…

  • På sporet af en mytes oprindelse

    Open Access•Anita Maria Leopold•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2001•References: 1

This article is a rereading of Friedrich Max Müller’s theory of the origin and growth of religion and mythology in the light of modern cognitive theories. The intention of this research is to draw attention to Max Müller’s linguistic and cognitive hypothesis of mythology and religion and compare it to modern cognitive theories presented by Mark Turner, Gilles Fauconnier, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. In the theory of Max Müller, notions such as…
