A Playful Text and a Text Full of Play
This article argues that play is prioritized and placed centrally in the Prose Edda. It shows that this medieval text engages with play both on a metacommunicative level and in the stories it tells. It points out that the actual subject matter of the Prose Edda, skaldic poetry, is a serious mode of expression which contains several play-elements. The article draws on theories of play (Huizinga, Caillois, Sutton-Smith, Classen) and investigates ho…
Visualiseringsstrategier og erindringsarkitektur i Snorri Sturlusons Edda
This article investigates Snorri Sturluson’s Edda seen in light of medieval memory theory. It is argued that the pagan myths that are treated in bookish culture are adjusted to ideas about memory that circulated in the 13th century. It is shown that important mnemonic principles, such as spatiality and visuality, have put their stamp on the Edda and other mythological texts, which seem to describe and transmit to their readers comprehensive memor…

Handbook of Pre-Modern Nordic Memory Studies
In recent years, the field of Memory Studies has emerged as a key approach in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and has increasingly shown its ability to open new windows on Nordic Studies as well. The entries in this book document the work-to-date of this approach on the pre-modern Nordic world (mainly the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, but including as well both earlier and later periods). Given that Memory Studies is an ever expanding criti…

Key Aspects of Memory and Remembering in Old Norse-Icelandic Literature
In recent years, various branches of memory studies have provided useful tools of analysis that offer new ways of understanding medieval cultures. The articles in this collection draw on these new theoretical tools for studying - and conceptualizing - memory, in order to reassess the function of memory in medieval Nordic culture. Despite its interdisciplinary and comparative basis, the volume remains very much an empirical study of memory and mem…
Islændingesagaer og erindring
Based on the assumption that the longstanding discussion about history/fiction has exhausted itself, this article suggests an alternative approach to the sagas of Icelanders. It approaches the sagas from a memory perspective and illustrates how two concepts of memory: cultural memory and artificial memory, provide us with useful methodological tools for opening new dimensions of saga narratives
En ny verden set fra udkanten
A New World Seen from the Edge: Snorri Sturluson and Images of Europe:In the beginning of the 13th century, the Icelander Snorri Sturluson wrote the Prose Edda. The prologue to this text describes how the linguistic, political and religious preconditions for Northern Europe were to be found in Asia. Snorri’s perspective was determined by his position in the Christian world, and his work articulates both Christianity’s universality and history’s t…
