  • Udstigere, akrobatik og træningsprogrammer

    Open Access•Mette Bjerregaard Mortensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabelig Skriftrække•2022

  • The Concept of Muhājirūn – and Its Potential Significance for the Piety of the Seventh-Century Qurʾānic Movement

    Mette Bjerregaard Mortensen•ARTICLE•Studia Islamica•2022

This article examines the Qurʾānic references to al-muhājirūn as an expression of a world renouncing current in the early Qurʾānic movement. Throughout the Qurʾān the muhājirūn are idealized for their willingness to leave their homes, wealth, and families behind in order to emigrate in the path of God. Traditionally, these emigrants have been interpreted through the lens of later Muslim exegesis as referring to the early believers who accompanied…

  • The Study of Islamic Origins

Walter de Gruyter GmbH &amp Co KG, Mette Bjerregaard Mortensen et al.•BOOK•Study of Islamic Origins•2021

The study of Islam’s origins from a rigorous historical and social science perspective is still wanting. At the same time, a renewed attention is being paid to the very plausible pre-canonical redactional and editorial stages of the Qur'an, a book whose core many contemporary scholars agree to be formed by various independent writings in which encrypted passages from the OT Pseudepigrapha, the NT Apocrypha, and other ancient writings of Jewish, C…

  • Spatial Expressions of Ascetic Tendencies in the Qurʾan

    Mette Bjerregaard Mortensen•ARTICLE•Numen•2019

In this article, I propose viewing the early Qurʾanic movement as an expression of strong ascetic tendencies. More specifically, I suggest seeing aspects of Qurʾanic rhetorics as offering a specifically spatial expression to broader ascetic tendencies that characterized late antiquity as a whole, and which may be labeled “axial,” insofar as they can be traced back to the middle of the first millennium B.C.E. , i.e., to the period coined by Karl J…

  • Koranen som træningsprogram

    Open Access•Mette Bjerregaard Mortensen•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2016•References: 5

The article is a case study of a single narrative in the Qur’an’s sura 18. In this article, I explore and discuss the ethical dimensions of the Qur’anic world view. The article takes its point of departure in an outline of the pre-dominant eschatological strand in the Qur’an and different Qur’anic perceptions about reward and punishment. Then, I discuss the moral implications of the idea of divinely sanctioned deeds and actions as well as the exi…
