  • Influences of Pre-Christian Mythology and Christianity on Old Norse Poetry

John Mckinnell•ARTICLE•The Journal of English and…•2022

This study of Vafþrúðnismál sets out to examine how the mythology of the pre-Christian past was reinterpreted to fit the worldview of educated people in thirteenth-century Iceland, and how that medieval Christian view may be understood today. It begins with a survey of the poem in its manuscript context and then proceeds to the possible dating of the mythological Eddic poems (where one must also bear in mind the fact that some poems include appar…

  • The Earth as Body in Old Norse

    Open Access•John Mckinnell•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2022

This article investigates two of three main ways outlined by Snorri Sturlusson in Gylfaginning in which Old Norse poets might refer to the earth in their poetry: By reference to the myth of the killing of Ymir as well as by reference to the immediate family of the goddess Jǫrð. By looking at the meaning of these references to the origins of the earth, the article investigates the underlying human ideas and reactions of these references. RESUME: D…

  • Decoding of responses to mixed frequency and phase coded visual stimuli using multiset canonical correlation analysis

John Mckinnell, Kaori Suefusa et al.•CONFERENCE•2016 38th Annual International…•2016

Brain-computer interfacing (BCI) based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) is one of the most practical BCIs because of its high recognition accuracies and little training of a user. Mixed frequency and phase coding which can implement a number of commands and achieve a high information transfer rate (ITR) has recently been gaining much attention. In order to implement mixed-coded SSVEP-BCI as a reliable interface, it is important t…

  • Modern productions of medieval English drama

    Open Access•John Mckinnell•CHAPTER•The Cambridge Companion to…•2008

Medieval theatre is unlike the English drama of any later period in that it lacks a continuous or nearly continuous tradition of performance. All modern productions of medieval plays are (or should be) experimental, therefore, either in attempting to rediscover the original staging and production methods of the play one is producing, or in trying to find modern ‘equivalents’ to those methods. Beginnings After performance of plays on traditional r…

  • The Medieval Pagent Wagons at York

    Open Access•John Mckinnell•ARTICLE•Early Theatre•2000

This article considers some physical aspects of the medieval pageant wagons used for the York Cycle. Many modern reconstructions have assumed that the pageants played side-on, but this view rests on assumptions derived from modern theatre, medieval two-dimensional art, or the demands of the open campus locations where many modern performances have taken place. Comparative European evidence (drawings of early ommegang wagons, and surviving Spanish…

  • A Runic Inscription from Tuquoy, Westray, Orkney

    Olwyn Owen, John Mckinnell•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1989

A RUNE-INSCRIBED STONE was found built into the partition wall of a substantial ‘hall-like’ structure. It is translated ‘Porsteinn Einarsson cawed these runes’
