Between space and time. Naturalist taphonomic observations of lesser rhea (Rhea pennata pennata) remains in southern patagonia and its archaeological implications
Greenness trends and carbon stocks of mangroves across Mexico
Mangroves cover less than 0.1% of Earth’s surface, store large amounts of carbon per unit area, but are threatened by global environmental change. The capacity of mangroves productivity could be characterized by their canopy greenness, but this property has not been systematically tested across gradients of mangrove forests and national scales. Here, we analyzed time series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), mean air temperature an…

The geoarchaeological and taphonomic analysis of P 35, a shell midden located on the southern coast of continental Patagonia, enables to address its formation history and the quality of the archaeological information it can provide. The comparison of aerial photographs and satellite images between 1968 and 2012, with periodic field controls, allowed to establish the evolution of the landscape, the beginning of an erosive process that exposed a la…
Human Predation and Natural History of Huemul (Cervidae; Hippocamelus bisulcus Molina) in Patagonia
We use published zooarchaeological evidence to discuss the various hypotheses concerning the past distribution of huemuls in Patagonia, southern South America. We then use these data to evaluate the interactions between this cervid and hunter-gatherers during the Holocene. The zooarchaeological record shows that huemul mainly inhabited forested and forest–steppe ecotonal environments during the Holocene. Huemul were hunted in exceptional circumst…

The results of actualistic taphonomic studies in Patagonia aimed at evaluating the preservation potential of vertebrates with different body sizes are presented. Large vertebrates include the guanaco (Lama guanicoe); the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens), and a flightless bird belonging to the Ratites, the Lesser Rhea (Rhea pennata). Small vertebrates are flying birds and a member of the Spheniscidae Family, the Magellanic penguin (Sphe…
Estudios sobre meteorización de huesos en Patagonia
Weathering is one of the major processes that cause the destruction of bones on the earth’s surface. In Patagonia, due to the low intensity of carnivores’ action, especially on large vertebrate remains, weathering has a central role. The aim of this paper is to present a synthesis of the results obtained in several habitats of the region, in order to assess what we know and what we still need to study about this taphonomic process
This paper is a first approach to faunal use in the production of bone tools in Punta Entrada and Parque Nacional Monte León locations, placed in the Atlantic coast, south of Santa Cruz River. The assemblage is associated to human occupations which took place in the last 2000 years, including an early signal ca. 5700-4000 BP in Monte León. The sample is classified in morphofunctional groups and we identified the bone used as raw material for each…
Taphonomic evaluation of penguin (Spheniscidae) remains at a shell-midden on the northern coast of Patagonia (San Matías Gulf, Río Negro, Argentina)
Current studies on bird bones conducted at the Neotropics show that differences in the impact of taphonomic processes are mainly due to body size and anatomy, as well as to the role of environmental and ecological contexts. Future research must include comparative studies and controlled observations to generate specific models that will help to understand taphonomic histories of zooarchaeological remains in the region

The Monte Len Archaeological Rescue Project resulted from the creation of Monte Len National Park (Santa Cruz, Argentina) as a way to mitigate the impact caused by a variety of natural and anthropic processes. The artefact, zooarchaeological, and chronological information developed has offered new evidence for the discussion of past human use of space in the southern Atlantic coast. Noteworthy among these are the use of different marine resources…
