  • On the effects of wildfires on poverty in Bolivia

    Open Access•Gustavo Canavire‐bacarreza, Alejandro Puerta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•References: 3

This paper examines the impact of wildfire events on poverty and the labor market in Bolivia. To this end, we match data from NASA’s MODIS Collection-6 MCD64A1 burned area product with household surveys for the period 2005–2020. Similar neighboring municipalities are clustered using the max-p-region algorithm to achieve survey representativeness at granular geographical levels. The causal effects of wildfire events on poverty, household per capit…

  • On the Determinants of Changes in Wage Inequality in Urban Bolivia

    Gustavo Canavire‐bacarreza, Gustavo Canavire-Bacarreza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Development•2017•References: 3

In recent years, Bolivia has experienced a series of economic and political transformations that have directly affected the labor markets, particularly the salaried urban sector. Real wages have shown strong increases across the distribution, while also presenting a decrease in inequality. Using an intertemporal decomposition approach, we find evidence that changes in demographic and labor market characteristics can explain only a small portion o…

  • Low test scores in Latin America

    Theodore R Breton, Gustavo Canavire‐bacarreza•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Latin American students consistently score low on international tests of cognitive skills. In the PISA 2012 results, students in seven Latin American countries had an average score of 395 in mathematics, or about 100 points lower than the average score of 497 in four Scandinavian countries. We estimate the effect of socioeconomic characteristics on student scores in Latin America and Scandinavia and find that 50 points of the difference are expla…

  • Reexamining the determinants of fiscal decentralization

    Gustavo Canavire‐bacarreza, Gustavo Canavire-Bacarreza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 13

This paper contributes to the existing literature on the determinants of fiscal decentralization by exploring in depth the empirical relevance of physical geography as a determinant of fiscal decentralization; more geographically diverse countries show greater heterogeneity among their citizens. The theoretical framework imbeds geography into the concept of spatial decay in the provision of public services and our empirical estimation employs a p…

    Open Access•Mónica Ospina Londoño, Gustavo Canavire‐bacarreza et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Desarrollo y Sociedad•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The economic and social dynamics of the major cities has resulted in a heterogeneous growth of educational coverage in the country. Thus, the provision of higher education has historically been concentrated in the cities of Bogota, Medellin, Cali and Barranquilla; turning these cities into poles of attraction for students who have been forced to migrate bearing with the economic costs of this decision, and creating inefficient allocations in acce…

  • More strictly protected areas are not necessarily more protective

    Open Access•Paul J Ferraro, Merlin M Hanauer et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

National parks and other protected areas are at the forefront of global efforts to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, not all protection is equal. Some areas are assigned strict legal protection that permits few extractive human uses. Other protected area designations permit a wider range of uses. Whether strictly protected areas are more effective in achieving environmental objectives is an empirical question: although strictl…
