  • A Continuity of Voices in Russell Banks’s A Permanent Member of the Family

    Open Access•Anne‐laure Tissut, Anne-Laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Sillages critiques•2023

Why do certain works seem to address us compellingly? This paper attempts to provide elements for an answer by putting forward the notion of a “voice of the text.” Taking Russell Banks’s short story collection A Permanent Member of the Family as its example, it explores some of the modalities whereby readers may trace singular and changing paths through the text that are shaped by their own history and sensibility as much as by the text’s potenti…

  • Read with Me/While We Wait—A Community of Voices in Percival Everett’s Trout’s Lie

    Open Access•Anne‐laure Tissut, Anne-Laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Humanities•2023

In Trout’s Lie, Percival Everett seems to be once more exploring pure form as part of a quest for abstraction. Yet the effect of the poems in the collection largely relies on the materiality of language characterizing all poetry—mostly a play on sounds and the visual dimension of the text. How to conciliate the quest for pure form and the unruliness of the bodily? It will be argued that Everett brings them together through a work on forms not onl…

  • Frustrations individuelles et collectives dans In the House in the Dark of the Woods , de Laird Hunt

    Anne‐laure Tissut, Anne-Laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•2023

Reading Laird Hunt’s In the House in the Dark of the Woods is an experience of frustration, as the text offers a tentative formulation of various traumas. As the reader discovers the unreliable narrator’s punctured text, she may feel a destabilizing tension between an almost necessary sympathy towards the narrator as the oversensitive victim of violence—both physical and psychological, which caused her lasting frustrations—and the rejection of th…

  • An interview with Laird Hunt

    Open Access•Anne-Julie Debare, Anne‐laure Tissut et al.•ARTICLE•Transatlantica•2021

The diversity of your work is often pointed out by critics, while its extreme coherence also comes to the fore, through its returning figures, motifs and concerns, or the continued vision it gives shape to. How does that relate-if at all-to your always working on several texts simultaneously. Could you tell us more about the process of mutual influence between stories or books developing concurrently

  • How To Do Things With Books

    Open Access•Anne‐laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Sens public•2021

The multimedia pages of VAS are a continuing exploration of forms of representation, which concomitantly show how meaning is constructed. In so doing, both the modalities of reading and our relationship to the book itself are radically challenged. This article shows how VAS revisits the standards of the book, in both its conception and reception, by revealing the political, economic and social, but also philosophical and even ethical issues relat…

  • Laird Hunt

    Anne‐laure Tissut, Anne-Laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•2019

The Body Artist is one of Don DeLillo most peculiar novel. Staying at her sea house, a grieving widow encounters a strange being, whose very reality remains uncertain. Based on the importance of the theme of networks in DeLillo’s work, this paper relies on communication theories in order to offer an analysis modelled around the notion of cybercorporeality. Consequently, the figure of the cyborg illustrates the unresolved status of the being in th…

  • Miroirs de lecture dans A Collapse of Horses de Brian Evenson

    Anne‐laure Tissut, Anne-Laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•2019•References: 1

The insistent presence of staged situations of writing and reading in A Collapse of Horses draws the reader’s attention to the reflexive dimension of the work. Yet its aim does not seem to be so much to ascertain the writer’s mastery over the text as to plunge the reader into an experience of the instability of language. Hence the modality of writing that has been called narcissistic opens onto an existential, and even possibly ontological medita…

  • The Water Cure, de Percival Everett

    Open Access•Anne‐laure Tissut, Anne-Laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Palimpsestes•2014

In the absence of any definite individuals among its protagonists, Blake Butler’s Scorch Atlas (featherproof press, 2009) stages the transformations of substances, both in its contents and its forms, partly through a refined elaboration of the visual aspect of the seemingly blotted or maculated pages, meant to illustrate degradation. Decaying matter and bodies are told in an unheard-of language, constantly deviating from common uses and enhancing…

  • Frenzy , Practical Philosophy, and Fictive Jokes

    Anne‐laure Tissut, Anne-Laure Tissut•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of American Studies•2013

Frenzy is a mythological fable suffused with such crucial philosophical issues as being, existence, time, and language. Through the narrative device of Vlepo, the trickster-servant to god Dionysos, who can read people’s minds, reading and interpreting are offered as paradigms for an appropriate attitude to life, opening onto the world through the development of relations. The article aims at showing how the poetic fabric of this lyrical novel bot…

  • Wonder-working “Antidotes

This paper aims at showing how the various moves and metamorphoses in the themes and structures of The, Ancient Child express the hero's change of point of view on the universe and bring about a similar change in the readers '. The novel thus appears as an initiation, through creation and the restored powers of language and storytelling, to an attitude of wonder towards space in its mythical conception of a dynamic, ever-mutable whole
