Unfavourable representations of touristic places
Travel writing, an important influence on tourism, is often criticized as hegemonic/colonial by postcolonial studies. This study notes that postcolonial studies invariably solely search for such intentions in representations of societies. A critique of such approach is made by analysing travel writing texts where a postcolonial approach would find hegemonic/colonial intentions, while such intentions are likely absent. This is done by showing that…
Aesthetic cognition of society
Patterns of representation in travel writing, travel guides, journalism and memoir are shown to amount to aesthetic cognition by comparison to social science analogues. Their postmodernity questions the supposed factuality of those genres. Travel writing and travel guides’s expected orientation to the present is contested by how the past is used. The patterns show operational potential for empirical testing of usual temporal boundaries of the pos…
Representations of Iberia at the turn of the 21st century in travel writing and social science
The importance of representations is discussed, prompting analysis of travel writing on Iberia. Portugal is portrayed as materially insufficient and as a traditional society. Spain shows up materially disadvantaged, significantly less traditional, and a non-harmonious society. Negative views predominate regarding both countries, with Spain’s portrait depending mostly on a work shown as prejudiced. Scholarly depictions are used as benchmarks and e…
Conditions of contact with otherness and their consequences
This study looks at correlations between conditions of contact with otherness faced by travel writers and structural dimensions of their writing, adopting a quantitative perspective in order to overcome the methodological flaw of implicit quantification found in studies of texts. The ideal-types of tourist, traveller and migrant underlie such explanatory conditions, along with gender and national culture. The tourist and the traveller are disting…
Substantial authenticity, (post/)modernity and transformation of otherness
A review of literature on authenticity argues in favour of what is called here substantial authenticity, against objective, constructed and existential notions, argued as non-mutually exclusive. Several themes in substantial authenticity are found in Nuevo viaje a la Alcarria (New Journey to the Alcarria), a book by the Nobel Prize winner for Literature Camilo Jose Cela: nostalgia/hostility to modern society; social integration; autonomy from soc…
