  • When failure is the option: Unravelling sexual assault outcomes

Open Access•Julien Chopin, Eric Beauregard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice•2024•References: 47

We investigate the concept of “criminal failure” in sexual crimes and the relevance of various theoretical frameworks for its understanding: individual offender's rational choice, environmental influences and routine activities, victimological characteristics from lifestyle theory, and crime interaction factors. We examined a sample of 1121 “failed” cases (i.e., attempted but not completed) and 1500 “successful” cases (i.e., completed) of sexual …

  • Asking about the Worst First: An Examination of Contextual Effects in Factorial Vignettes

    Open Access•Amélie Pedneault, Dale Willits et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methodology•2022•References: 34

Contextual effects refer to the process by which responses given to survey questions can be affected by question order. Generally, contextual effects harm data measurement validity by introducing bias and increasing measurement error; the risk is that responses to a survey’s later questions are partly affected not only by the substance of the question but also by the preceding questions. Two opposite effects are possible: a carryover effect refer…

  • Validating the Screening Scale of Pedophilic Crime Scene Behavior

    Open Access•Robert J B Lehmann, Sébastien Brouillette-Alarie et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2022•References: 50

The Screening Scale of Pedophilic Crime Scene Behavior (SSPC) is a seven-item structured rating scale assessing pedophilic sexual arousal. In the current study, we cross-validated the scale’s convergent validity using multiple measures of sexual interest in children (clinical diagnosis of pedophilia, the high fixation/low social competence type of the MTC:CM4, and phallometric assessment of sexual interests toward children) in two independent sam…

  • Children of Mixed-Ethnic Heritage and Adverse Life Outcomes: A Comparison of Two Korean Adolescent Samples

    Open Access•Youngki Woo, Amélie Pedneault et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2020•References: 59

The number of mixed-ethnic adolescents from multicultural families in South Korea has rapidly increased over the last several years. Although traditionally ethnically homogeneous, Korea has recently shifted toward multiculturalism, yet little research has compared mixed and single-ethnic youth on adverse outcomes in Korea and, to date, no research has done so using a quasi-experimental design. This study uses propensity score weighting with a sam…

  • Promoting Higher Learning Through Artivism

    Krystal Roig-Palmer, Amélie Pedneault•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•2018

Artivism is a movement inclusive of art and activism that has flourished through the United States for decades. Multiple forms of artivism are responsible for initiating dialog amongst demographically distinct groups of people. The present study focuses on two community mural projects completed by justice related youth and adults in Florida and Washington states. Data analyzed entailed field observation notes, semi-structured interviews, and ques…
