  • IC (Italy - China) love affair

    Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2026•References: 23

Vinyl record covers go beyond packaging; they serve as visual statements that transform music into cultural artifacts. Particularly in popular music, album covers use a rich visual language to merge music with established aesthetic and ideological frameworks. This article examines how 1980s Italo-Disco vinyl covers engaged with Orientalist visual tropes and focused on representations of ‘Chineseness.’ Through an iconographic analysis of selected …

  • Stars on tape

    Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Journal of Greek Media & Culture•2025

In 1980s Greece, the spread of home video technology catalysed the emergence of a prolific direct-to-video industry that reconfigured media production and audience engagement outside the traditional film and television industries. This article explores the careers of Stamatis Gardelis and Michalis Mosios, two male stars representative of the VHS era, whose personas became sites for negotiating masculinity, class and ethnocultural identity within …

  • Home movies as visual folklore

    Open Access•Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2025

This paper explores the use of home videos as a vernacular form of audiovisual documentation and focuses on the case of Spyros Koukossis, an electronics shop owner from the village of Agia Paraskevi on the island of Lesvos. By employing a VHS camera, Koukossis recorded local traditions and festivities during the annual ?Tavros? religious fair in honor of Agios Charalampos. Captured between 1984 and 2009, these recordings appear at first glance to…

  • Direct-to-trans

    Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Queer Studies in Media & Popular…•2024

This article seeks to reflect how a minority group takes advantage of new media, such as the videocassette recorder (VCR), to self-represent and identify. In particular, it follows the late Aloma (1948–2015), a middle-aged Greek transgender woman who, in the late 1980s, produced and directed three direct-to-video porn films. While foreign trans visibility at that same time was relatively small as well, this was the first time a transgender person…

  • Visual folklore in 1960s Greek popular cinema

    Open Access•Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2023

Despite its slow and ambivalent transformation, particularly after WWII, Greek society strived to present a novel and relatively modern face during the 1960s. While tradition in all its facets had been a long-lasting staple, even affecting critical aspects of everyday life, modernity began to take steps and seek changes: peasants left the countryside to explore new opportunities in the urban centers, immigration rose, education emerged as a means…

  • We consume to forget; we collect to believe

    Open Access•Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Studies in Communication Sciences•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Almost 50 years after the VCR’s (Video Cassette Recorder) worldwide penetration in the international entertainment market, this paper will explore VCR-use-related and VCR-viewing-related activities, and the cultural practices of the Greek video cultures, particularly videotape collectors, in the 21st century. Rooted in various disciplines, the article aims to illuminate the persistent nature of VHS collectors’ previous entertainment routines. Fro…

  • The Azure Generation’

    Open Access•Ursula-Helen Kassaveti, Nikolaos Papadogiannis•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2022

This article focuses on the years 1982–1984, which witnessed the first systematic effort to establish a moderate right-wing youth organization in Greece during the Cold War. It shows that the invention of the political songs of the Liberal youth ONNED underpinned its mass mobilization in 1982–1984. In this vein, our analysis enriches recent historiographical approaches that focus on cultures of Conservatism and on political and cultural changes i…

  • “Sharp Sybaritic” Retrofuturistic Deco Realism

    Open Access•Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Imaginations Journal of…•2020

Originating in the late 19th century, the airbrush spray gun was widely used in the mid-20th century as a photo retouch tool in advertising, while it contributed to the introduction of Photorealism in the early 1970s. The “LA scene” of the same decade popularized airbrush art through masterful illustrations. Using a variety of different representations, the 1980s airbrush art became the distinctive postmodern popular style of the decade, especial…

  • I Don’t Know how to Talk about These Wor(l)ds, but I Do Walk, I Shoot, and I Write

    Open Access•Ursula-Helen Kassaveti•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2019•References: 6

In this article, I examine how my unprogrammatized and spontaneous informal fieldwork in Athens, undertaken in a rather unconsciously autoethnographic vein, has helped me while on the process of investigating my personal identity. My temporary change of academic direction and my delving into the ocean of fieldwork have shaped and answered my endless quest for important answers about a researcher’s own self. Through the use of written text, photog…
