A longitudinal analysis from 2008 to 2023: What you always wanted to know about journalists in Switzerland
The article provides a comprehensive overview of journalists in Switzerland based on the most recent wave of the Worlds of Journalism (WoJ) survey conducted in 2023. Abusive lawsuits against media professionals in Switzerland: Insights from expert interviews and a nationwide survey
Abusive lawsuits aimed at silencing journalists—so-called Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs)—pose a serious threat to press freedom and liberal societies. In Switzerland, empirical research on the phenomenon has been largely absent. This study addresses this gap through a mixed-methods design that combines expert interviews with a nationwide survey of editorial managers. It examines the occurrence, definitional challenges, a…
Comparing Journalistic Role Performance Across Thematic Beats: A 37-Country Study
Studies suggest that, at the routine level, news beats function as unique “micro-cultures.” Exploring this “particularist” approach in news content, we compare how the interventionist, watchdog, loyal, service, infotainment, and civic roles materialize across 11 thematic news beats and analyze the moderating effect of platforms, ownership, and levels of political freedom on journalistic role performance in hard and soft news. Based on the second …
Journalists in Switzerland
Until the late 1990s, no data was available on the subject of Swiss journalists or the state of journalism in Switzerland. After the national survey of 1998, a new survey was conducted in 2007/2008 to determine how journalists and journalism in Switzerland had changed over the last decade, and how changes in the media (e.g,m the Internet) and society (e.g., globalization, commercialization) had affected journalists in the country. This article pr…
Zwischen Kontinuität und Wandel: Journalismus in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz
Journalists in Switzerland: Structures and attitudes revisited
It is often stated that journalism and the media are going through some fundamental changes. In this article, we present a description of the journalists in Switzerland, based on a nation-wide survey conducted in 2015. This data gives a quantitative description of journalists in Switzerland. Furthermore, this article makes comparison between various groups of journalists, for example between the different language regions in Switzerland, in order…

Localizing The Daily Show: The heute show in Germany
The recent success of the heute show, a German adaptation of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, on the one hand exemplifies how in this globalized age a foreign format can successfully be adapted to a country's own political, cultural, and journalistic context, even in a genre as notoriously culture-bound as political satire. On the other hand this success story also illustrates how perceptions of political satire appear to have shifted in Germany,…
Representation of Islam and Christianity in the Swiss Media
What is the role of the media in multi-religious societies? Are they aggravating latent tensions between religions or rather helping to promote mutual understanding? These are the key research questions addressed in this paper. The discussion in this paper refers to narration and framing as two theoretical approaches from communication science. The empirical findings of a media content analysis in Switzerland show strong differences between Islam…
Measuring the democratic quality of radio news: Experiences from Liberia
There is a general consensus that media are an essential element of democracy if they fulfil particular quality requirements in their reporting. Abundant literature deals with media quality from a theoretical perspective, but empirical knowledge on journalistic practice with regard to its role in democratization is rare, and this is even more so in the case of African countries. First, this article seeks to assess the quality of radio in Liberia,…
Springer/Wolling in diesem Band).
