Social Media's Digital Divide in Political Engagement: Bridging Reach, Credibility, and Democratic Inclusivity in Uttar Pradesh, India
This research paper examines the role of social media in political campaigning in Uttar Pradesh, which is a politically significant state and has a large and varied electorate. The use of digital platforms was found to increase campaign outreach, albeit disproportionately across demographic lines. The study analyzes survey data from 503 individuals across 17 cities. The results show that social media enables rapid dissemination of political conte…
The Dalit Movement in Uttar Pradesh and the Party–Politics Dilemma: Insights from the 2024 Lok Sabha
The a priori framework-based election surveys have been found to be devoid of political nuances. They not only struggled to explain the 2024 Indian General Election results but also could not identify actors and their methods that outwitted the most powerful election machinery the country has ever seen. In contrast, this study employs a qualitative interpretive method to investigate the dynamics of Dalit politics in Uttar Pradesh. Covering the Av…
Intriguing Capital– Identity Relationship Dalits and Caste in India
The article interrogates the claim that capitalism would replace caste and liberate Dalits. People at the bottom rung of the caste hierarchy are exhorted to support neoliberal capitalism, a crusader against caste. This claim is based on the premise that capitalism abolishes all pre-existing social relations. Dealing with this argument at both empirical and theoretical levels, the article argues that this unilinear understanding of capital’s negot…
What Lies Beneath the Successes of Hindutva: Reading the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2022
What explains the success of the Bhartiya Janta Party in the 18th Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha election? Hindutva gets the due credit but the socio-political dynamics beneath Hindutva is often sidelined in political discussions. What makes Hindutva appealing? Is Hindutva a fixed ideology or an ever-evolving one? How does Hindutva correspond with the lived realities of people? How does Hindutva plug the alternative discourse of Social Justice? How d…
Is Politics Going Casteless? A dialogue with Politically Untied Jatis in North India
Obituaries on the demise of caste politics in India have already been read. It is argued that religious identity has trumped caste as a tool of political mobilization. Underlining that changing terms of political discourse represents a major break from the past; this article finds the coexistence of ‘casteless’ politics and the ascendancy of dominant castes in electoral politics perplexing. The article argues that politics in India is going ‘beyo…
Revisiting Senapur: Reflections on Agrarian Changes in North India
Through a revisit study in 2013, this article attempts to explore agrarian relations in Senapur, a village located in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Research reveals that landlessness remains concentrated amongst dalits as does the continuing hold of ‘upper castes’ on land. When inheritance acts as the primary mode of transfer of landed property in the absence of market-mediated and state-mediated transactions, two results are evident: a decrease in the …
Sociology of Land Reforms and Dalits in Uttar Pradesh: Reflections on the World Bank’s Report on Land Policies
From Dalit standpoint land reform is not just transfer of an economic asset in their favour but it also involves upsetting of the existing socio-political structure. Land reform through market skips this crucial element. This article argues that in a state like Uttar Pradesh where land ownership pattern still follows caste hierarchy reflecting the dominance of upper caste and a few sections of OBCs on agrarian structure and where scope of distrib…
Disparity and development in Uttar Pradesh
Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are coming closer as India's largest state has to vote before May 2007. Before elections different political parties have to come out with their election manifestoes and it is high time for researchers to present the true picture of development in the state so that development issues find a place on the agenda of the coming assembly elections. Voting on development issues may influence priorities of the coming …
Structural challenges, development goals and concerns for equity: A case of caste in India
This paper discusses caste as a structural challenge for development goals oriented towards equity. In an attempt to do so, it takes an overview of the process of development in post-independence India. Focusing on the interface of caste and state, it notes that experiences of modernisation in India have been different from that of the West, or as envisaged in classical literature. On the one hand, caste has not remained unimpressed by economic a…
