  • Pynk proverbs: Peeling the layers on spirituality and public health practices in the ‘P-valley’ television series

    G Greene, Yewande O Addie et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2025

Starz's 'P-Valley' television series rivets audiences with its racy themes set in the backdrop of a fictional Mississippi town's strip club called the Pynk. The provocative setting could easily overshadow the profound social and health themes embedded within each episode. This paper engages with P-Valley's second season, released in 2022 as edutainment, which represents an American cultural group's approaches to coping with public health challeng…

    Yewande O Addie, Moon J Lee•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2024

Using Entman’s framing theory, we explored primary news frames in Nigerian newspaper coverage of national opioid abuse. Results yielded 12 news frames: 5 causal frames (Poor governance, Trauma coping mechanism, The perfect trafficking hub, Corrosive culture, Performance boosters), 3 consequential frames (Nigeria as a failing state, Thriving Black Market demand, Uptick in criminal kinsmen: fraudsters and terrorists) and 4 solution frames (Hawkeyed…

  • From #Rona to #Omarion: Black Twitter’s hashtag activism and critical discourse of Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Rachel Grant, Yewande O Addie et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2024•References: 2

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, social media was one of the key digital spaces for community and information. As cases and deaths rose within US Black communities, Black Twitter continued to serve as a counterpublic for humor, health commentary, and hashtag activism. This study will examine the techno discourses of Black Twitter’s usage of hashtag activism during the COVID-19 pandemic. We argue that the hashtags and tweets used within the Black…

  • The art and science of systemic wellness in Black communities: Qualitative evaluation of a multimodal theatrical production

    Open Access•Yewande O Addie, Yulia A Strekalova et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2021

Background: Edutainment has long been used as a strategy in health promotion and public health wellness interventions. In March 2019, a large US southeastern university hosted a multimodal theatrical production entitled From Colored to Black (FCTB). The play used a historical lens to broadly address social determinants of health such as disparities in education, access to health services, fair housing and health outcomes. This creative interventi…

  • African Story Time: An Exploratory Study of Narrative as a Reporting Technique in U.S. News Coverage Of Nigeria’s Missing Girls

    Open Access•Yewande O Addie•ARTICLE•The Journal of Public Interest…•2019•References: 33

News reports about nearly 300 kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls spread globally in April 2014. Ongoing updates on the tragic incident permeated social media through digital advocacy efforts. Though research on U.S. news coverage generally indicate underreporting regarding missing women of color and negative reporting on African current events, news of Nigeria’s missing schoolgirls managed to make waves in U.S. media and elicit longstanding compassio…
