The Montreal Protocol or the Paris Agreement as a Model for a Plastics Treaty
The notion that a plastics treaty is necessary is gaining traction, but there is less agreement as to its content. Some, including this author, have suggested that a plastics treaty should be modelled on treaties such as the Montreal Protocol, which sets out a broad commitment to end the use of a particular material and then introduce regulations to ban particular forms of that material over time. This approach has an immediate appeal—it sends a …

Sociology, Science and Sustainability: Developing Relationships in Scotland
This paper considers the application of the sociological imagination during the analysis of data collected during an ethnographic study of an environmental regulator, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). SEPA is tasked with implementing the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Scotland, which will radically alter the regulation of water use. Understanding Human and Ecosystem Dynamics in the Kola Arctic: A Participatory Integrated Study
The Lake Imandra watershed is located in one of the most developed regions in the Arctic - the Kola Peninsula of Russia. Approximately 300 000 people live on the roughly 27 000 km2 watershed, making it one of the most densely populated areas of the Arctic. Most of the people are involved in large-scale mineral extraction and processing and the infrastructure needed to support this industry. This paper reports the results of a pilot project staged…
Women academics at Royal Holloway and Bedford Colleges, 1939-69
This article examines the relationship between female academics and domesticity at Royal Holloway and Bedford Colleges between 1939 and 1969. Women scholars in particular have had to juggle the demands of pastoral care and research and the former often took priority, which meant that women lagged behind men in academic publications. The evidence shows that, even though the balance of power in academic appointments shifted dramatically from women …
I. Ospar Decision 98/3 and the Dumping of Offshore Installations
In September 1997 the government of the United Kingdom announced new policies on the dumping of offshore installations. The new policies centred on a general prohibition of dumping of offshore installations for all but those instances where there was absolutely no alternative. 1 They were presented as a sea change from the policies of the previous Conservative government which had required each case to be assessed on its merits and were hailed by…
II. The 1996 Protocol to the London Dumping Convention and the Brent Spar
In November 1996 a special meeting of the contracting parties to the London Dumping Convention 1972 (LDC) adopted a new Protocol. The objective of the Protocol is to protect “the marine environment from all sources of pollution”.3 This is to be done by placing more restrictions on dumping and clarifying ambiguities in the law
