  • Italian humanists and the Cingani (fifteenth–sixteenth centuries). Part I

    Open Access•Leonardo Piasere•ARTICLE•Romani Studies•2026

The first Romané groups appeared on the Italian peninsula when Humanism was already in full swing. It is therefore natural that humanists were the first intellectuals to expound speculations to their regard. In this paper I try to provide a general overview of the Italian authors who, especially between 1450 and 1550, contributed to such speculations and how they constructed them (sometimes in a different way from what occurred elsewhere). Interp…

  • Roma and Romá in North-East Italy

    Leonardo Piasere•CHAPTER•Mobility and Territoriality•2021

This chapter considers the different forms of territorial behaviour developed by the Roma and the Roma, two 'Gypsy' groups. The Roma and Roma show that territoriality is a complex phenomenon: one group can have a territory in respect to another, and a non-territory in respect to a third competitive group. The Roma were convinced that the affluence of the Italians was exploitable everywhere. The Roma, on the other hand, know the 'world' of the Ita…

  • Pour une histoire des auto-dénominations romanès

    Open Access•Leonardo Piasere•ARTICLE•ANUAC•2019

  • The Catholic Church and the Evangelisation of 'Nomads' in Italy

    Open Access•Leonardo Piasere•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2018•Cited by: 1

It was only in the 1900s that the Catholic Church began to concern itself systematically with the evangelisation of 'Nomads'. The pastoral strategies did not develop as a monolithic set of actions within the Catholic Church; rather, they varied in relation to specific events and showed considerable diversification. The article discusses this complexity and the interplay between different imageries about the Roma and Sinti and different evangelisa…

  • Horror Infiniti. Die Zigeuner als Europas Trickster/Horror Infiniti. The Gypsies as Europes Tricksters

    Open Access•Leonardo Piasere, Kathleen Schlütter•ARTICLE•Behemoth•2011

The figure of trickster is well known to all folklore traditions round the world, even among Romani speaking groups as beng (devil) like in the Mediterranean and Balkan context. But the focus of the article concerns the transformation of Roma and other Gypsies themselves into tricksters, which can be shown in three examples: 1) Gypsies in the literature of the Italian Renaissance, 2) Gypsies in the Rumanian Ţsiganiada of the early 19th century an…
