  • Gendered work and family trajectories

Open Access•Rosa Weber, Camilla Härtull et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Research•2026

Although research on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has extensively examined gender inequality in participation, its implications for longer-term work trajectories and gender earnings gaps remain unclear. Given the strong interconnection between work and family life, it is crucial to study gender disparities in STEM from a life course perspective. In response, we exploit longitudinal Finnish register data to asses…

  • Parental Birth Order and the First Stage of Tracking Into Schools

    Open Access•Camilla Härtull, J Saarela•ARTICLE•European Journal of Education•2025

No previous study on the interrelation between parental birth order and offspring educational attainment has analysed the first stage of tracking into schools, which in many countries is highly selective of persons who aim for university studies. We do so and examine how parental birth order is associated with attainment of general upper secondary education in Finland. Three‐generational register data on the total population are used to assess ho…

  • Ethnic registration and tertiary-level education of children of mixed native couples

    Open Access•Camilla Härtull, J Saarela•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2025•References: 39

Using population register data, we examine how intermarried parents' choice of ethnic registration of their children is associated with the offspring's probability of having a tertiary-level education. The study context concerns two ethnic groups, Finnish speakers and Swedish speakers in Finland, which are native and have equal constitutional rights, but have unequal admittance rates to tertiary-level education. We find that a mixed background pe…

  • Earnings mobility across three generations of natives in Finland

    Open Access•Camilla Härtull, J Saarela•ARTICLE•Research in Social Stratification…•2024•References: 11

We examine earnings mobility across three generations in Finland and compare two native groups with equal constitutional rights, Finnish speakers and Swedish speakers. Based on register data of the total population, we employ rank-rank regressions to assess the degree to which earnings in men relate to their fathers’ and paternal grandfathers’ earnings. We estimate regressions on the national level and in regions with Swedish-speaking population.…

  • Educational mobility across three generations of Finnish-speaking and Swedish-speaking Finns

    Open Access•Camilla Härtull, J Saarela•ARTICLE•Research in Social Stratification…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Using total population register data that link three generations, this article studies educational mobility in two native ethno-linguistic groups, Finnish speakers and Swedish speakers in Finland. The purpose is to examine how multigenerational educational mobility takes form in a setting with equal constitutional rights, but with relatively more study places in Swedish at the tertiary level. For the cohorts born 1976–1985, the probability of hav…

  • The Role of Cash Benefit and In-Kind Benefit Spending for Child Poverty in Times of Austerity

    Open Access•Mikael Nygård, Marja Lindberg et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2019•Cited by: 17•References: 7

This article investigates the development of two forms of public spending on families, as well as their role for child poverty in 22 European countries during the period 2006–2015. It uses aggregated data on child poverty from Eurostat and data relating to public spending on families from the OECD SOCX database. It analyses the association between child poverty and public family spending on cash benefits and in-kind benefits, respectively. The fi…

  • Ethno-Linguistic Affiliation and Income Poverty in Native Households with Children

    Open Access•Camilla Härtull, J Saarela•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2018•References: 2

The child poverty rate has increased noticeably in Finland since the mid-1990s, and there are numerous studies in this area. However, little is known about child poverty in the two native and equal population groups, Finnish speakers and Swedish speakers. Using detailed register-based data that cover the period 1987–2011, we analyze how child poverty depends on parental ethno-linguistic affiliation, and whether there is variation in income povert…
