  • Westermarck and Malinowski

Open Access•Olli Lagerspetz, Kirsti Suolinna•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2025•References: 9

This article highlights the personal and intellectual relationship between Bronisław Malinowski and Edvard Westermarck. In the interwar period, social anthropology went through a paradigm shift from evolutionism to functionalism. Malinowski put himself forward as a reformer, in contrast with Westermarck's more conservative and conciliatory approach. On the other hand, Malinowski always deferred to Westermarck and described himself as his disciple…

  • Två akademiska öden

    Open Access•Kirsti Suolinna•ARTICLE•Budkavlen•2023

  • Mellan etnologi och modern sociologi

    Open Access•Anna Larsson, Kirsti Suolinna•ARTICLE•Sociologisk Forskning•2008•Cited by: 1

Between ethnology and sociology: K. Rob. V. Wikman as a mediator in Finland and Sweden K. Rob. V. Wikman, professor in sociology at the Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland, played a central role both within Finnish and Swedish sociology in the 1940s and 1950s. He was a student of Westermarck and thus his own research represented an ethnosociological tradition, which at that time was challenged by modern, American-influenced sociological idea…

    Open Access•Kirsti Suolinna•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Hilma Granqvist was educated at Helsinki University in the tradition of the Westermarck School. The topic of her dissertation 'Women in the Old Testament' led her to carry out fieldwork in Palestine. Between 1925 and 1931 she carried out fieldwork in the village of Artas, in all a 3-year period. Her radical decision to study only one village and thereby restrain from wider comparisons severed her relationship with her supervisor. Consequently she…

  • Focusing on fieldwork

    Open Access•Kirsti Suolinna•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•1999

The purpose of this essay is to look at the results of two Finnish fieldworkers, with the history of the social anthropological research as background. By Finnish norms Edward Westermarck's academic career was impressive, but his pupil Hilma Granqvist was obliged to work mostly outside the academic world. Both of them did their fieldwork in countries, where the Islamic religion had a strong influence. Westermarck worked in Morocco, and Granqvist …

Two crises in Finnish sociologyThe aim of the article is to compare two different institutional and paradigmatic crises in Finnish sociology. The first crisis occurred after World War II when the social sciences had to master new challenges posed by postwar Finnish society. At the University of Helsinkia new faculty was established which promoted modern social sciences. The earlier dominant Westermarck school lost its institutional position when …

  • The relationship between change and religious movements

    Open Access•Kirsti Suolinna•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•1976

Change constitutes different things for the groups, as the position of one group may improve, but that of another deteriorate. Social change is a consequence of how the different groups act, and their actions again depend on their social and economic interests. In other words, there are groups in society (social classes, professional groups, the agrarian population, industrial workers), which come more or less openly in conflict with each other w…

  • The religious message in action - a case study

    Open Access•René Gothóni, Kirsti Suolinna•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•1975

We understand a religious message to be the product of a religious movement. In studying such a message, it is very much to the purpose to place it in the context in which it operates. The cultural and social context of a religious message is some religious movement. Hence, the message should be examined against that framework. Each message has a certain structure, and its detection is of prime importance. Messages are not only part of the tradit…
