Who moves from fixed-term to open-ended contracts? Youth employment transitions in a segmented labour market
This article explores the career effects of fixed-term employment among Polish youth, taking into account specific legal and institutional arrangements affecting both the incidence of temporary jobs and the chances of moving into more stable employment contracts. The aim of the analysis is twofold. First, it seeks to assess whether temporary contracts serve as a stepping-stone to stable employment or a trap leading to fragmented careers consistin…
The Polish Panel Survey, Polpan
The Polish Panel Survey POLPAN provides data infrastructure to analyze the dynamics of social inequality from a life-course perspective. Historical events shape the study's research design. In 1987-1988, 5,817 randomly sampled men and women aged 21-65 are interviewed in what is still state socialist Poland. Soon after, their lives are upended by the profound transformations that the anti-communist revolutions in Eastern Europe triggered. To under…
Which Clouds Have Silver Linings? Fixed-Term Employment, Psychological Distress, and Occupational Position in Poland

These studies have generally failed to establish a conclusive, straightforward link between working on a fixed-term contract and subjective quality of life. In light of these results, further attention needs to be paid to the heterogeneity of tempora…

Occupational heterogeneity in non-standard employment is an important and policy-relevant topic of investigation, and one which has not received sufficient attention. The main thesis of this article is that the function of fixed-term contracts, which in turn affects the situation and career prospects of employees, is dependent on occupation. Using data from European Survey of Income and Living Conditions, 2005–2008, I investigate the heterogeneit…
Employment Instability: A Dynamic Perspective
This article analyzes the incidence and correlates of employment instability in Poland, using individual-level retrospective career data from the 1998, 2003, and 2008 POLPAN surveys. It uses a new instability indicator, which takes into account the length of workers' consecutive employment spells: A respondent is considered to be in unstable employment if he or she had not held a single regular job lasting three years or longer within a ten-year …
