  • Guest Editor's Introduction

    Open Access•Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Professions and Professionalism•2013

The studies presented in this issue of Professions & Professionalism are parts of a larger research program called The Professional Landscape in Sweden. Guest editor Thomas Brante explains why it is of interest to an international audience

  • The Professional Landscape

    Open Access•Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Professions and Professionalism•2013

This special issue of Professions & Professionalism seeks to explain the transition of occupations from non-professions to professions and the conditions and causes that generate professions (i.e., the bases of professionalization). Empirically, we use the histories of the Swedish professions, positing that these histories have several close similarities (and, of course, differences) with those of other nations, thus making this project of intern…

  • Professions as Science-Based Occupations

    Open Access•Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Professions and Professionalism•2011

How professions should be defined and separated from other occupations has constituted an enduring theoretical and empirical problem in studies of the professions. In this article, the definitions of the so-called list approaches, involving enumerations of social attributes, are scrutinized. Weak-nesses are highlighted and analysed. It is argued that an alternative approach to the issue of definition, commencing from the epistemic or cognitive di…

  • Professional Fields and Truth Regimes

    Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2010•Cited by: 18•References: 12

Sociology of the professions has faced difficulties in delineating and defining the core of its object of study, the concept and phenomenon of profession. Setting out from the so-called French epistemological tradition, this article tries out a new possibility. It is argued that if there are trans-historical elements in professions, they are found at the cognitive side, as a certain reasonably invariant cognitive structure. The structure implies …

  • Explanatory and Non-explanatory Goals in the Social Sciences

    Open Access•Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The paper has three aims. First, to show that Julian Reiss' critique of what he calls the New Mechanist Perspective in the social sciences is built on a number of misconceptions; second, to provide some arguments for the need of reflections and discussions about common and “ultimate” goals for the social sciences; and third, to suggest a focus on mechanisms as one such viable goal

  • Consequences of Realism for Sociological Theory‐Building

    Open Access•Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•2001•Cited by: 23•References: 5

It is argued that the Achilles heel of contemporary sociology – and great parts of social science – is a) weak theory development, and b) absence of a meta-theory providing a common platform and a shared goal for its practitioners, fostering cumulativity. A meta-theory called causal realism (a variant of critical realism) is suggested for these purposes. The main tenets and key concepts of realism, such as causality and explanation, mechanism, st…

  • Teori och typologi

    Open Access•Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Sociologisk Forskning•1994•Cited by: 2

Theory and typology. Macrosociology, institutional spheres and social actionThe conceptual triad ’state-market-civil society’ is taken as point of departure for a discussion of the broader issue of the uses of typologies in sociology. It is argued that in order to avoid being subordinated to politically loaded notions pervading public discourse, a genuine sociological typology should meet two demands; its dimensions should be derived from a macro…

  • Brain or Heart? The Controversy over the Concept of Death

    Open Access•Thomas Brante, Margareta Hallberg•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1991•Cited by: 7•References: 3

Extended controversies over a new definition of death have occurred in most Western countries, providing good examples of the kind of `science-based' disputes that increasingly characterize the policy of contemporary welfare states. In this paper, with the aim of introducing and testing a conceptual framework capable of capturing the more general features of such controversies, we reconstruct and examine the death-concept dispute in Sweden. The c…

  • Sociological Approaches to the Professions

    Open Access•Thomas Brante•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1988•Cited by: 24•References: 1

Studies of the professions clearly illustrate the intricate interplay between general conceptions of society and history, sociological theory, definitions of social categories, empirical research and political values - or, more bnefly, between theory, 'facts' and politics In this article the interplay is illustrated by the two dominant theory-constructions on professions in sociology. The first is the functionalist or 'naive' tradition, the secon…
