  • “For the first time someone understood”

    Open Access•Peter Holmqvist•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2024

Autism has come to be portrayed as something complex, ambiguous, and heterogeneous. I therefore contend that what is now needed are analytical tools to further explicate the modalities of this heterogeneity and ambiguity. I propose that one way forward is to draw on analytical vocabularies intended for analyses of the (non)coherence of phenomena, more specifically Law et al.’s concept modes of syncretism. I employ this concept to stage a theoreti…

  • Child Studies Multiple

    Open Access•A Sparrman, Y Hrechaniuk et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 25

This text is an exploration of collaborative thinking and writing through theories, methods, and experiences on the topic of the child, children, and childhood. It is a collaborative written text (with 32 authors) that sprang out of the experimental workshop Child Studies Multiple. In this article, I analyze an advice column published in the Swedish parenting magazine Vi Föräldrar [Us Parents], featuring the child psychologist Malin Alfvén. Drawing on the concept of figurations (Castañeda, 2002), denoting the process of outlining and defining an …

  • Brains and psyches

    Open Access•Peter Holmqvist, Peter Skagius•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Most children and families have not had direct contact with child psychological and psychiatric experts. Instead they encounter developmental theories, etiological explanations and depictions of childhood disorders through indirect channels such as newspapers. Drawing on actor–network theory, this article explores two child psychological and psychiatric modes of ordering children’s mental health discernible in Sweden’s largest morning newspaper, …

  • Professional reinventions

Peter Holmqvist, Peter Skagius et al.•ARTICLE•History of Psychology•2016•References: 8

Since the early 20th century, the Swedish psychology profession has undergone several changes in its essential tasks, epistemological foundations, and social roles. These changes occurred through an ongoing "tuning" with Swedish society, in which the profession strove to appear relevant to society's concerns and problems as well as enroll others to share the profession's goals and aims. Studying the history of the profession can thus shed light o…
