Culture in online anonymous interaction
We suggest that the theory of group styles, based on the pragmatist idea of people creatively using cultural tools for meaning-making, can be a fruitful way forward to study the cultures of anonymous online communities such as imageboards. We argue that users creatively build these ‘glocal’ cultures on affordances but also globally disseminated cultural toolkits of, in this case, imageboards. We present such an empirical analysis of Ylilauta, a F…
Youth Participation and Democracy
Navigating pandemic waves
This article studies how the COVID crisis affected polarisation, politicisation and consensus in Finnish parliamentary discourse, a case in which we expect pluralist political institutions and culture to mitigate polarisation. In addition to the empirical contribution, we add to the theory of polarisation by drawing from Chantal Mouffe’s theory of plural democracy to argue that the opposite of polarisation may take the form of a depoliticised con…
Comparative moral principles
The article compares three influential theories used in sociology and psychology to categorize types of morality—Luc Boltanski & Laurent Thévenot’s justification theory , Shalom H. Schwartz’s basic human values theory , and Jonathan Haidt’s moral foundations theory —to simplify the complexity presented by three different categorizations, while retaining necessary nuance, and to translate the concepts of each into the language of the other two. A …
Topic modeling for frame analysis
We argue that ‘topics’ of topic models can be used as a useful proxy for frames if (1) frames are operationalized as connections between concepts; (2) theme-specific data are used; and (3) topics are validated in terms of frame analysis. Demonstrating this, we analyse 12 climate change frames used by NGOs, governments and experts in Indian and US media, gathered by topic modeling. We contribute methodologically to topic modeling in the social sci…
Social Media and the Emergence, Establishment and Transformation of the Right-Wing Populist Finns Party
This paper assesses the significance of social media for the Finns Party and the related anti-immigration movement from 2007 to the present day, in light of theories on the relationship of populism and social media. These include people-centrism, disenfranchisement, homophily, the attention economy, media elitism, and (lack of) communicative resources. Tracing the historical trajectory of the Finnish anti-immigration movement and the Finns Party,…
Going Overboard
Anonymous online groups such as imageboards have increasing cultural influence. Recently, they have been connected with far-right political movements. This mixed-methods study investigates politics on Overboard, a Finnish imageboard. We use a convolutional neural network to learn linguistic features of the community's own understanding of politics, studying two large text corpora, collected in 2014-2015 and 2018-2019. This enables us to find poli…
Politicization of migration in the countermedia style
Countermedia are ultrapartisan media outlets that position themselves in opposition to the mainstream media and ‘the establishment’. In this article, we analyse the countermedia style and its adoption by parliamentarians, particularly in the politicization of migration, in the case of Finland. We conduct an analysis of large datasets of text from Finnish countermedia, mainstream media and parliamentary speeches from 2015 to 2017, based on computa…
Populist knowledge
‘Post-truth politics’, particularly as manifested in ‘fake news’ spread by countermedia, is claimed to be endemic to contemporary populism. I argue that the relationship between knowledge and populism needs a more nuanced analysis. Many have noted that populism valorises ‘common sense’ over expertise. But another populist strategy is counterknowledge, proposing politically charged alternative knowledge authorities in the stead of established ones…
Familiarity as a tool of populism
Populist argumentation claims to represent 'the people' against 'the elite', appealing to emotions and reacting to a sense of crisis. By analysing a public debate in Finland in which populist arguments appropriate a culturally shared, familiar experience - that of singing Suvivirsi, the Summer Hymn - I argue that evoking familiarity is an effective way of 'doing populism'. Analysing media texts from 2002 to 2014 and a questionnaire to political c…
