    Open Access•Tommy Tranvik, Mona Bråten•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning•2015•References: 13

    Open Access•Tommy Tranvik•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning•2012•References: 20

  • The Rise and Fall of Popular Mass Movements

    Open Access•Tommy Tranvik, Per Selle•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2007•Cited by: 13•References: 17

This article is about the erosion of the Norwegian democratic infrastructure, with particular emphasis on the causes and effects of the transformation of the voluntary sector and the decline of social movements. We are seeing a turning away from large-scale ideological mass movements and an increase in smaller and nimbler associations that are better at catering for individual needs and wishes, but poorer in plugging members into the central deci…

  • Reform failure

Tommy Tranvik, Anne Lise Fimreite•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2006•Cited by: 14•References: 2

This article addresses the relationship between central and local government in Norway after two decades of devolution reforms. The aim of the reform process was to provide more freedom for local government. However, recent research has revealed that local government is actually less autonomous now than before. We argue that one reason for this is new regulation and control measures initiated by central government. Based on interviews with MPs, c…

  • State and citizens in Norway

    Tommy Tranvik, Per Selle•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2005•Cited by: 12•References: 3

In this article we argue that two of the most crucial parts of the Norwegian democratic infrastructure – the civil society, consisting of voluntary associations, and local governments – are experiencing problems. From being institutions for popular influence and participation, they may now be enjoying less autonomy and power. First, we see a turning away from the ideological mass movements and a greater interest in smaller and single-purpose asso…
