Diary of an SNP First Minister: A Chronopolitics of Proximity and Priorities
This article provides a content analysis of Nicola Sturgeon's first ministerial diaries in the final two years of her leadership (April 2021–March 2023). As first minister, to whom and what did she give her time—which issues and interest groups had access? Which didn't? Or, who and what may be missing? An audience with a national leader can be indicative of priorities and potential for influence—as can its absence. The lens of chronopolitics—the …
A Biopsychosocial Approach to HIV Fatigue: A Cross-Sectional and Prospective Analysis to Identify Key Modifiable Factors
This study aimed to identify the prevalence and predictors of current fatigue and fatigue at 1-year follow-up, in people with HIV. Participants were recruited from HIV outpatient clinics in London, England. We explored a range of bio-psychosocial factors associated with current fatigue severity, identifying the most salient factors in a multifactorial model. A prospective study explored the predictive value of specific psychological and behaviora…
Hysteresis and the sociological perspective in a time of crisis
Hysteresis is a versatile concept for volatile times. Pierre Bourdieu's sociological use recognises hysteresis in times of dislocation and disruption between field and habitus, 'in particular, when a field undergoes a major crisis and its regularities (even its rules) are profoundly changed' (Bourdieu, 2000: 160). In considering the issues and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, hysteresis renders visible 'multi-level, multi-temporal dynamics'…
The Routledge Companion to Rehabilitative Work in Criminal Justice
Over the last 30 years there has been a steady growth in ‘victim-focused work with offenders’. Yet this phrase itself is vague, conveying little about what such work actually is, and is not. If it conjures any meaning at all, it is most commonly associated with victim awareness or empathy programmes designed to help reduce recidivism by improving offenders’ understanding about the impact of their harmful behaviour on victims. These programmes are…
Pyrrhic liturgy
A poem about the enculturated rhetoric, rituals and degradation ceremonies within tabloid news cycles and consumption, and the costliness of their collateral consequences
Greening Justice: Examining the Interfaces of Criminal, Social and Ecological Justice
This article examines the growth of ecological awareness, alongside the emergence of environmental sustainability initiatives, within criminal justice institutions around the world. To date, such developments have received little empirical analysis from criminology scholars. Internationally, this article is among the first to critically analyse the ‘greening’ of policing, courts, prisons, offender supervision and community reintegration. Availabl…
