    Open Access•Torild Hammer•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2006•Cited by: 7•References: 1

The aim of this article is to analyse the labour market integration of previously unemployed youth in a life course perspective. ‘Work, Lifestyle and Health’ is a longitudinal panel survey following a sample of nearly 2,000 individuals who are representative of the Norwegian cohorts born between 1965 and 1968. • The Probability for Unemployed Young People to Re-Enter Education or Employment

Torild Hammer•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2003•Cited by: 1

This article examines the return to education or employment of unemployed young people in Northern Europe. Comparative surveys of nearly 8600 unemployed young people in Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Scotland enabled us to study the probability for unemployed young people to re-enter the educational system versus employment. The results showed that, in all countries, re-entering post-compulsory education was mainly dependent on edu…

  • Mental Health and Social Exclusion among Unemployed Youth in Scandinavia. A Comparative Study

    Open Access•Torild Hammer•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2000•Cited by: 5

Although there has been considerable research on the relationship between mental health problems and unemployment among youth in a national context, there have been few comparative studies involving countries with different cultures and different levels of unemployment. Surveys in the five Nordic countries (Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark) of nearly 8,000 young unemployed people enable us to study young peoples’ experience of unemplo…

The article examines the influence of receiving unemployment benefits upon job chances of the previously unemployed. …

  • Staying on

    Open Access•Torild Hammer, Andy Furlong•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1996•References: 7

In this paper we consider some of the implications of the growth of educational participation for the labour market integration of young people between the ages of 17 and 19 in Norway and Scotland. In particular, we focus on the experiences of disadvantaged youth and assess the extent to which they benefit from participation in post-compulsory schooling. We argue that in terms of success on the labour market, post-compulsory secondary education i…

  • Consequences of Unemployment in the Transition from Youth to Adulthood in a Life Course Perspective

A representative sample of nearly 2,000 young people in Norway participated in a postal survey in 1985 when they were 17 to 20 years old. The same sample was followed up again in 1987, 1989, and in 1993 when they had reached adulthood (25 to 28 years). Central Bureau of Statistics in Norway was responsible for the collection of data. This article focuses on the unemployment career from youth to adulthood and consequences for transition to adultho…

  • Are “Traditional” Sex Differences Less Conspicuous in Young Cannabis Users Than in Other Young People

Hilde Pape, Torild Hammer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1994

Recent research has revealed conspicuously few distinctions between young males and females who use cannabis. Such findings may reflect the general slackening of the sex-role pattern in the younger generations. Alternatively, they may reflect distinctive characteristics of the cannabis culture. Using data from a nationwide representative sample (n = 1,478) of young Norwegians (21-24 years old), this study explores whether "traditional" sex differ…
