Teaching Note—The Dynamic Duo: Use of Standardized Clients Across the Social Work Practice and Field Curricula
This reflection from one department of social work showcases the use of simulation as an integrated tool of practice-based education and assessment for social work education within generalist and specialized practice classes. We show several ways we are using simulation as both a learning and assessment tool for social work practice skills. Utilizing Change Leadership Within Social Work Education to Prioritize and Expand Interprofessional Education in a University Setting: A Case Study
Interprofessional education (IPE) is a critical educational component for promoting the quadruple aim of health care. Additionally, interprofessional practice (IP) is included in the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) educational standards. Human Sexuality as a Critical Subfield in Social Work
Human sexuality is of vital importance to social work practitioners, educators, and scholars. Yet historically, the profession's leadership around it has waxed and waned, impacting practice. This article discusses the importance of human sexuality as a critical subfield within social work. It suggests that the mechanisms, namely textbooks, journals, and national conferences, for stimulating human sexuality social work scholarship are limited. The…
Prevention as an Explicit Part of the Social Work Profession: Part Two of a Systematic Investigation
In 2011, Advances in Social Work published results from an investigation into the explicit use of 'prevention' language within the social work profession. Findings from this study highlighted a gap in the knowledge and integration of prevention-focused social work education and practice. A recommendation was made to examine additional indicators that illustrate the extent to which 'prevention' is an accepted and growing subfield within the social…
It is Not Just about Me”: A Relational Understanding of Young Women's Sexual Negotiations
Social work has historically been reactive in approaching young women's sexuality, often focusing on the consequences of unintended pregnancy. This pattern has inadvertently perpetuated the silencing of young women's sexual selves, leaving them vulnerable in sexual decision making. This article presents a new conceptual model to explore relational influences on young women's sexual negotiations. It extends the theory of planned behavior, previous…
Placing HPV Vaccination Within a Social Work Context: The Issue of Access to Care
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and the leading cause of cervical cancer. Consistent disparities in the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer for racial minorities and low-income women have been found. To date, there have been no articles written in a social work journal about HPV. This article presents an argument for including HPV under social work's purview and presents research findings …
Prevention as an Explicit Part of the Social Work Profession: A Systematic Investigation
Historically, social workers have espoused a philosophy of prevention. However, this philosophy has not consistently translated into prevention-focused social work practice. This gap in social work practice is of concern given the growing federal attention placed on prevention efforts in key social work arenas, such as health, mental health, and substance abuse. In an effort to illustrate this practice gap, this article presents a systematic inve…
