  • Racial Structural Conditions and Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

    Open Access•Yan Zhang, Zhang Yan et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 34

The present study utilizes a conceptual framework derived from Blau's structural theory to assess the effects of racial group size, racial heterogeneity, racial inequality, and racial segregation on anti-Asian hate crimes. The analysis is performed using data from California law enforcement agencies (2002-2021) and U.S. census and American Community Survey data. Results show that the sizes of the White and Black populations positively affect anti…

Open Access•Yaguai Yu, Zanzan Xu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Based on data from 64 resource-based cities in China from 2010 to 2019, the efficiency of green innovation is evaluated by using the super-efficiency SBM Model with undesired outputs, while influencing factors of green innovation efficiency are analyzed by the spatial Durbin model. The results are as follows. First, as for the efficiency evaluation, the average green innovation efficiency in 62 resource-based cities from 2010 to 2019 is only 0.56…

  • Neighborhood Social Control and Perceptions of Crime and Disorder in Contemporary Urban China

    Open Access•Lening Zhang, F Messner et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 59

By drawing on the two streams of Western literature on “neighborhood effects” and perceptions of neighborhood disorder adapted to the distinctive organizational infrastructure of neighborhoods in contemporary urban China, we examine the contextual effects of different forms of neighborhood social control (i.e., collective efficacy, semipublic control, public control, and market‐based control) on different types of perceived disorder (i.e., crimin…

  • Socio‐Demographic Correlates of Fear of Crime and the Social Context of Contemporary Urban China

    Open Access•Jianhong Liu, F Messner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2009•Cited by: 8•References: 54

Previous research in the West has established major socio‐demographic correlates of fear of crime. The interpretation of these correlates is typically based on the concept of physical or social vulnerability of individuals. These correlates are implicitly regarded as invariant to social or community contexts, reflecting universal human behavioral patterns. The present study argues that social change may alter patterns of perceptions associated wi…

  • Research Training, Institutional Support, and Self-Efficacy

Open Access•Mark Thomas Lynch, Lening Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Social Work•2009

While the expectations for social work practitioners to do research have increased, their involvement is still limited. We know little about what factors influence involvement in research. The present study proposes a theoretical model that hypothesizes research training and institutional support for research as the exogenous variables, research self-efficacy as an intervening variable, and research activity as the endogenous variable. The study …

  • The historical patterns of occupational attainment of racial minorities in Massachusetts

    Open Access•Xiaogang Deng, Lening Zhang•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In the past three decades numerous studies have been conducted to document structural changes in the labor market and their impacts on occupational attainment at the national level. However, few systematic studies have been conducted to assess racial disparity in the labor market at the state level over time. As Massachusetts has become more racially diverse than ever before and is prepared for greater challenges in the global economy, the state …

  • An Exploration of the Determinants of Reporting Crime to the Police in the City of Tianjin, China

    Open Access•Lening Zhang, F Messner et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2007•Cited by: 21•References: 23

Western research has investigated three types of correlates of crime reporting–victim‐specific (individual or household), incident‐specific, and environment‐specific variables. The current study applies this general, analytical framework to explore the determinants of crime reporting to the police in contemporary urban China. Using data collected from a recent survey of criminal victimization in Tianjin, we assess the determinants for reporting o…

Bin Liang, Hong Lu et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 10

This paper examines Chinese students’ attitudes about the death penalty in contemporary China. Drawing upon Western public opinion research on the death penalty, samples of Chinese college students at home and abroad are used to explore the magnitude of their pro-death penalty attitudes and sources of variation in these opinions. Both groups of Chinese students are found to support the death penalty across different measures of this concept. Seve…

Research Summary: The Los Angeles County Repeat Offender Prevention Program (ROPP) was designed to improve school performance and prevent reoffending among the enrolled juvenile offenders through a milieu of social services. It was a 3-year pilot project established as part of a statewide juvenile correctional program funded by the California State Legislature, which commenced in 1999 and ended in 2001. A true experimental design was employed, an…

  • Interdependency, communitarianism and reintegrative shaming in China

Open Access•Hong Lu, Lening Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2002•Cited by: 6•References: 8

Braithwaite’s theory of reintegrative shaming (1989) depicts that shaming has either crime-amplifying or inhibiting effects depending on how it is done. Using a sample of residents in Shanghai, China, this study tests Braithwaite’s hypothesis that interdependency is conducive to reintegrative rather than stigmatizing shaming. We hypothesize that individuals who have greater interdependent relationships are more likely to practice reintegrative, r…

    Open Access•Lening Zhang, F Messner•ARTICLE•Criminology•1995•Cited by: 15•References: 33

This research explores the relationship between family deviance and delinquency using survey data from Tianjin, a large city in China. We hypothesize that, similar to findings in the West, family deviance will be positively related to delinquency in China. We also hypothesize that the nature of the causal process linking these two variables will differ in certain respects from the pattern observed in Western nations, reflecting the unusually stro…
