  • Enhancing capacities in genomic surveillance capabilities for Sars-CoV-2 and dengue virus

Open Access•Sully Márquez, Gerald Vasquez-Aleman et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Latin American countries have faced limited access to new scientific technologies for many years due to restricted budgets for research programs, which has hindered local scientific development. These research disparities became especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, as lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) like Ecuador and Nicaragua had restricted access to genomic surveillance protocols, sequencing technologies, and adequate infrastru…

  • Risk factors for third-generation cephalosporin-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli carriage in domestic animals of semirural parishes east of Quito, Ecuador

    Open Access•Siena L Mitman, Heather K Amato et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing and other antimicrobial resistant (AR) Escherichia coli threaten human and animal health worldwide. This study examined risk factors for domestic animal colonization with ceftriaxone-resistant (CR) and ESBL-producing E . coli in semirural parishes east of Quito, Ecuador, where small-scale food animal production is common. Survey data regarding household characteristics, animal care, and antimicrobial…

  • Dynamics of Microbial Communities during the Removal of Copper and Zinc in a Sulfate-Reducing Bioreactor with a Limestone Pre-Column System

    Open Access•Aracely Zambrano-Romero, Darío X Ramírez-Villacis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Biological treatment using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is a promising approach to remediate acid rock drainage (ARD). Our purpose was to assess the performance of a sequential system consisting of a limestone bed filter followed by a sulfate-reducing bioreactor treating synthetic ARD for 375 days and to evaluate changes in microbial composition. The treatment system was effective in increasing the pH of the ARD from 2.7 to 7.5 and removed tot…

  • Perceptions of Mission-Critical Organizational Resources

    David R Hodges, D R Hodge et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article explores administrator and staff perceptions of mission-critical agency capacity in a predominantly Hispanic region that has a high degree of acculturation and elevated use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The domains explored are financial resources, proposal development, agency policies, organizational structure, communication, leadership, planning, and networking capabilities. Although significant differences were found among…

  • Cultural Sensitivity in Atod Agencies

Open Access•David R Hodges, Paul Cardenas et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Social Work•2000

Administrator and staff perceptions (N = 72) of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) agency cultural sensitivity were explored in a predominantly Hispanic rural area with elevated levels of acculturation and high ATOD usage. While providers generally agreed that a relatively moderate need existed for training related to cultural issues, a more nuanced picture emerged in the purview of culturally- related barriers. Administrators viewed the la…
