A transformative model for culturally-informed social work and health professions education
This article introduces a curricular design that brought together faculty and members of local immigrant and oppressed groups to build, teach, and evaluate a culturally-informed social work course. Relational Learning in Social Work Education
This article explores the relational learning model for teaching clinical social work practice. Evaluations of a course on loss, grief, and death illustrate that relational learning methods enhanced students' relational and communicative knowledge and skills, and contributed to a transformative learning process. The value of parent-to-parent support has been noted in research with parents of children who have a range of special needs and chronic medical conditions, however, less is known about the benefit of such mentorship for parents caring for seriously ill and dying children. Findings from a qualitative study with mothers of seriously ill children, including those whose children had died, provided rich and detailed information about the personal and …
Mothers of Children with Acquired Disabilities
This article presents findings from a phenomenological dissertation that interviewed mothers of young children who acquired permanent disabilities. Mothers' accounts provide a rich source of information to professionals about the subjective and interpersonal experiences that accompany unexpected acquired disability in a young child.
