Human-AI Collaboration in Bidirectional Multilingual Institutional Translation
Recent research on large language model translation has largely focused on product-oriented comparisons between human and machine output, in which human-AI collaboration is typically narrowed to post-editing. This article argues that an approach overlooks how translation quality is shaped through decision-making in the translation process. Drawing on process-oriented perspectives in translation studies (Toury, 2012), it reconceptualizes human-AI …
Association of maternal longitudinal haemoglobin concentrations with adverse pregnancy outcomes
Background: Maternal haemoglobin (Hb) is a potential biomarker of maternal and neonatal health. Little is known about trimester-specific associations between maternal Hb concentrations and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Here, we assessed the magnitude and shape of these associations and further estimated developmental trajectories of maternal Hb concentrations during pregnancy. Methods: In this prospective, observational cohort study, we enrolled pr…
Unlocking Synergistic Outcomes
Great lake basins are important hotspots for biodiversity research, and constructing an ecological security pattern for multi‐species synergistic conservation is crucial for biodiversity enhancement. However, in ecological source identification, model parameter optimization that addresses species‐specific sensitivity to stressors remains limited. Taking the Dongting Lake (DTL) Basin as a case study, this research focused on birds and amphibians. …
Keep your friends close, and your foes closer
Why do member states of international organisations sometimes support the admission of strategic rivals? While existing research emphasises alignment as a key condition for international organisation expansion, it overlooks why members choose to admit certain adversaries but not others. This article examines the case of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, focusing on Russia and China’s decision to grant full membership to India – a state often…
Local Aspirants and Politicised Chieftaincy Disputes
Why do politicians intervene in some chieftaincy succession disputes but not others? The key actors and their motivations in these processes remain understudied. In this article I leverage a comparative analysis of two similar chieftaincy disputes in Ghana's Upper West Region, and develop inductively a theory of local aspirants - political actors with dual memberships in chieftaincy and politics. I find that local aspirants from disputing faction…
Chiefs and Pre-Election Violence in Sub-Saharan Africa
This article examines how African chiefs shape pre-election violence (PEV) locally. I argue that chiefs with greater capability of voter coordination, which stems from precolonial centralized states, reduce local risk of PEV. Utilizing existing and original data, I find that precolonial centralized states have a negative effect on PEV in Anglophone Africa, where precolonial institutions have been better preserved. This relationship is robust to a…
