  • Sense of belonging, sense of exclusion, and racial and ethnic identities in Korean transracial adoptees

    Grace S Kim, Karen L Suyemoto et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 12

Although many Korean transracial adoptees (KTAs) have White European American (WEA) family members, their racial features place them in the minority group. Thus, they navigate the meanings of race and culture from two reference groups: the majority WEA group and the Korean American group. This study explored the processes through which perceptions of group meanings and sense of belonging and exclusion related to the development of racial and ethn…

  • Sex, College Major, and Attribution of Responsibility in Empathic Responding to Persons with HIV Infection

Open Access•Laia Bécares, Castellano Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2004

This investigation studied the influence of sex, college major, and attributed responsibility on college students' empathic responding towards persons infected with HIV. We hypothesized that (1) women would score higher on empathy than men; (2) nursing and psychology majors would score higher on empathy than business and computer science majors; and (3) participants would score higher on empathy towards a target who contracted HIV through blood t…

  • At the crossroads: Managed mental health care, the ethics code, and ethnic minorities

    Martin J La Roche, Castellano Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Mental health clinicians are facing an increasing number of ethical problems related to the delivery of managed mental health care services to ethnic minorities. The authors argue that (a) economic pressures have led to the development of the managed health care movement; (b) the combination of such economic pressures and the development of that managed care movement have influenced the promulgated ethical standards of the American Psychological …

  • Self-Orientation and Depression Level among Dominicans in the United States

Open Access•Martin J La Roche, Castellano Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This research examines an interaction model in which self-orientation levels mediate the effects of perceived social support and general self-efficacy on depression level. Two dimensions of self orientation were included in this formulation: idiocentrism (the tendency to define oneself through self-attributes) and allocentrism (the tendency to define oneself in relation to others). We hypothesized that idiocentrism would interact with general sel…

  • Bem Sex-Role Inventory Stereotypes for Men and Women Varying in Age and Race among National Register Psychologists

    Open Access•Barbara F Turner, Castellano B Turner•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

554 psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology used the Bem Sex-role Inventory to rare a "mature, healthy, socially competent" individual in one of 18 target groups (a black or race-unspecified man, woman, or adult in their late 20s, late 40s, or late 60s). Factor analysis produced factors which generated three scales--nurturant, agentic, and self-governing. The attributes "feminine" and "masculine" were …

  • Perception of College Students' Motives for Shoplifting

    Open Access•Castellano B Turner, Sheldon Cashdan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1988

Motivational patterns for shoplifting among college students were assessed using a projective questionnaire. Of the various motives offered for shoplifting, “poverty” and “self-indulgence” were the most prevalent. The third most frequent reason given was some variant of “fun” or “thrill,” indicating that some shoplifters may engage in this form of larceny for pleasure and excitement. A number of respondents indicated that revenge or diffusion of …

  • Gender, Race, Social Class, and Self-Evaluations among College Students

    Open Access•Castellano B Turner, Barbara F Turner•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1982•Cited by: 8•References: 11

The purpose of this study was to modify Heiss and Owens's (1972) formulation on trait differences in the self-evaluations of blacks and whites and integrate it with the literature on sex role socialization, thereby elaborating the instrumental-expressive dichotomy they proposed so as to generate and test hypotheses regarding race, gender, and SES differences in self-evaluations. University students rated themselves on a fifteen-item semantic diff…

  • Racial Discrimination in Occupations Perceived and Actual

    Castellano B Turner, Barbara F Turner•ARTICLE•Phylon (1960•1981

TrfHE MAJOR PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY is to determine the relationship between the actual representation of blacks in certain important occupations and individual perceptions of discrimination against blacks in those same occupations. That is, we are attempting to relate the perceived occupational opportunity structure to the real occupational opportunity structure in American society. • Dimensions of Racial Ideology: A Study of Urban Black Attitudes

    Open Access•Castellano B Turner, William Julius Wilson•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1976•Cited by: 6•References: 1

Six dimensions of racial ideology were analyzed based on interview data from 1934 blacks in a northern city and a southern city. Blacks who favor separatism tend to be more alienated, fearful of race genocide, race conscious, and supportive of racial violence than those who endorse interracial cooperation. An orientation of suspiciousness, distrust, and estrangement toward white society was particularly evident in the sentiments of blacks who res…

Questionnaires were administered to 70 black female, 75 black male, 1,457 white female and 1,429 white male university freshmen. In order to test three alternative theories regarding perceptions of discrimination, analyses of variance related sex, race, and SES to total scores of perceived occupational discrimination against blacks (BDST) and against women (WDST). Blacks perceived significantly more discrimination against black people than did wh…

  • Evaluations of Women and Men Among Black and White College Students

    Open Access•Barbara F Turner, Castellano B Turner•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1974•Cited by: 4•References: 6

Rainwater's assertion that blacks have low self-evaluations because they receive more negative evaluations from other blacks than whites receive from other whites is challenged here by reference to Heiss and Owens' evidence that negative self evaluation among blacks is limited to work-related traits. Substantial support was found for our major hypotheses that, compared to whites, (1) blacks would report more negative evaluation of “most men” but …
