Social consequences of illness (Chapter 5)
Chapter 5. Illness and social situation
Fundamentals of Item Response Theory
The geography of corporate production
Panels and Cohorts
In submitting this preliminary and tentative analysis of age patterns of participation of the white population in recent presidential elections, we hope to make three kinds of methodological contributions. First, we call attention to the unique design features of a substantial body of archival data that seems to have been insufficiently analyzed, and we begin the exploration of the error structure of these data. Second, we consider how the statis…
Discovering Heterogeneity
In the case of the 2 x 2 x2 table resulting form a three-wave panel study, Converse's "black-and-white" model, with discrete latent classes, and the Rasch continous latent-trait model cannont be distinguished. When the reponse is trichotomous, the resulting 3 x 3 x 3 table provides information on heterogeneity of respondents that is detected in different ways by these two kinds of models. Different kinds of heterogeneity, leading to models with d…
No Opinion or Not Sure
The design of the 1956-58-60 American Panel Study provides a means of demonstrating that “no opinion” and “not sure” are not interchangeable responses. There is, however, no strong general tendency for the “no opinion” response to be carried over from one interview to another two years later to a greater extent than can be explained by a latent-class or latent-trait model, although within a single interview there is a strong tendency for differen…
