A 3D agent-based model for simulating urban densification in Toronto, Canada
The use of land parcel data, 3D visualisation and urban theories offers a significant opportunity for advancing simulations of urban densification. This paper presents a 3D agent-based model (ABM) to explore future urban densification dynamics in Toronto based on stakeholder behaviour and interactions, the impact of zoning regulations, and profit expectations. The ABM establishes residents, developers, landowners, and the local zoning authority a…
Party Line or Bottom Line? Decision-Making in Local Contexts
Does partisanship reduce the importance of self-interest in local political decision-making? I examined the case of homeowners and their preferences for lower property taxes, as well as their evaluations of zoning and development policy, to answer this question. Relying on data from a conjoint survey experiment ( n = 2036), I found that homeowners were more likely to select a candidate who supported lower property taxes than non-homeowners, on av…
Spotlighting the Economy: Media Coverage and Mayoral Evaluations
This article examines local media's moderating role in the relationship between local economic performance and mayoral approval. Media's moderating role is especially important in subnational contexts, such as cities, where citizens have particularly low levels of political knowledge. In this article, I hypothesize that the economy's influence on mayoral approval is conditional on the economic coverage of the mayor. I tested this hypothesis on tw…
Are retrospective evaluations of local governments moderated by perceptions of influence
Objective I examined whether retrospective evaluations of local governments were influenced by perceptions of local governments’ influence. Methods I fielded a survey ( n = 1000) that asked respondents about their local governments, their perceptions of the economy and crime, and the influence of local governments on the economy and crime. Results I found that respondents who strongly agreed with a statement that local governments had important e…
Recruiting farm parents for a 6-week online child safety survey study using paid Facebook advertisements
Agricultural populations are a popular target for research due to the industry's dangerous conditions, unique work environments, and youth-including workforce. However, reaching and recruiting eligible participants is challenging and expensive when compared to other industries. We conducted a two-phase, multi-week paid advertising campaign on Facebook.com , varying delivery time, imagery, verbiage, and targeting methods to recruit U.S. farm paren…
Talk Local to Me: Assessing the Heterogenous Effects of Localistic Appeals
Contemporary public opinion in the United States has been characterized by affective polarization and the nationalization of political behavior. In this paper, we examine whether local framing can decrease voters’ reliance on national partisan identities when evaluating their representatives in the United States Congress. Relying on both an experimental study and observational data from senators’ Facebook posts, we find evidence that “talking loc…
Party Competition, Personal Votes, and Strategic Disloyalty in the U.S. States
Legislators will sometimes vote against their party’s position on roll-call votes to differentiate themselves from the party mainstream and to accrue a “personal vote.” Research suggests that the use of rebellion to generate a personal vote is more common (1) among majority party members and (2) among ideological extremists. But these majority party extremists only have a strong incentive to rebel in situations where the accrual of a personal vot…
Nationalization and Its Consequences for State Legislatures
Objective I theorize that as nationalization increases, state legislatures will take less legislative actions related to local topics and take more legislative actions on divisive, national issues. Method To measure nationalization I use election data as well as data on mass partisanship in a state. To measure a state's legislative agenda, I use data on legislative actions collected from LexisNexis. For my statistical analysis, I use two‐way line…

That Awkward Scale”: Verdi, Puccini, and the Scala enigmatica
On August 5, 1888, the Gazzetta musicale di Milano challenged its readers to harmonize a curious scale that it had received from a famous Bolognese musician. Two weeks later, the journal’s editors published several commendable solutions, including one by the scale’s inventor, Adolfo Crescentini. The Gazzetta’s “scala-rebus” (or scale-puzzle) would likely have been forgotten were it not for the fact that Verdi wrote his own solution (not published…
