Charting the Boundaries of Societies in a Trans-European Perspective
This paper considers the Polish-German workers, mainly from the eastern parts of Prussia, Austria-Hungary, and the Russian Empire, who moved to the Ruhr Valley in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Extrapolating from this case study, it suggests a way of rethinking our conception of societies by analyzing the processes through which demarcation and belonging were produced at local, state, and trans-European levels. During this per…

The re-making of a Europe of differences
This article discusses the fundamental question of how the differentiation of people on the move or in transit and their categorization changed in revolutionary and post-imperial times. These interacting processes have affected Europe and the negotiation of its internal and external boundaries. Drawing on examples from the rich history of migration and mobility since the late eighteenth century, the article demonstrates how individual research st…

Migrations and Borders
Current media images of a “fortress Europe” suggest that migrations and borders are closely connected. This special issue brings together scholars from history, sociology and anthropology to explore cross-border mobility and migration during the formation, development, and transformation of the modern (nation-)state explicating the conflictive and fluctuating character of borders. The historical perspective demonstrates that such bordering proces…
Placing Migration in Perspective
Against the backdrop of the intense debates on flight currently taking place, the introductory contribution discusses insights that can be gained by exploring migration, mobility, and sedentariness from a relational perspective. Analyzing transitions between mobile and sedentary life phases and life worlds allows us to identify not only interpretative ambivalences, and changes in how mobility is differentiated and evaluated. As we come to underst…
A Site of Shifting Boundaries
In recent decades, our perception of borders has become increasingly complex: 30 years after the Schengen Agreement, EU citizens’ freedom to travel is largely taken for granted, yet contemporary debates on refugees and the external borders of the European Union suggest that borders resemble semi-permeable membranes, enabling the influx of “desired” persons while excluding “undesirable” migratory flows. However, these trends in “filtering” movemen…
