The contribution of ancient genomes to the variation of brown fat thermogenesis in the modern Japanese
Background: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a role in non-shivering thermogenesis, yet its activity varies significantly among individuals and across seasons. We previously reported that BAT thermogenesis is lower and more seasonally plastic in Japanese individuals compared with continental East Asians. Objective: Given the unique genetic ancestry of the Japanese, we hypothesized that genome variation inherited from the Jomon people, prehistoric…
An adaptive variant of SLC25A11 enhances brown adipose tissue activity in humans
Background: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) counteracts obesity primarily by enhancing energy expenditure. Although substantial individual variation in BAT activity suggests the involvement of genetic factors, reports on specific genetic variants remain limited. Objective: To identify genetic determinants of human BAT activity by integrating adipose tissue eQTL data and natural selection metrics for genes differentially expressed between BAT and WAT. …
Acute hypobaric hypoxia induces coordinated DNA methylation alterations and immune cell redistribution in lowlanders
Background: Acute hypobaric hypoxia rapidly affects oxygen transport, endocrine regulation, and immune function. However, how short-term hypoxic stress links immune cell redistribution with changes in blood DNA methylation remains unclear. Objectives: We aimed to characterize coordinated immune and DNA methylation responses to acute hypobaric hypoxia in lowlanders and to distinguish methylation changes caused by altered blood cell composition fro…
Association between thermogenic brown fat and genes under positive natural selection in circumpolar populations
Background Adaptation to cold was essential for human migration across Eurasia. Non-shivering thermogenesis through brown adipose tissue (BAT) participates in cold adaptation because some genes involved in the differentiation and function of BAT exhibit signatures of positive natural selection in populations at high latitudes. Whether these genes are associated with the inter-individual variability in BAT thermogenesis remains unclear. In this st…
Signatures of adaptation in myopia-related genes on the sunlight exposure hypothesis
Background Myopia is a common eye disorder that results from gene-environment interactions. The prevalence of myopia varies across populations, and exposure to bright sunlight may prevent its development. We hypothesize that local adaptation to light environments during human migration played a role in shaping the genetic basis of myopia, and we aim to investigate how the environment influences the genetic basis of myopia. Method We utilized the …
Development and field testing of a decision aid to facilitate shared decision making for adults newly diagnosed with attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder
BACKGROUND: The number of individuals who are diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during adulthood has increased in recent years. However, there is still no decision aid (DA) to help adults newly diagnosed with ADHD make decisions regarding further treatments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the development process of a DA for adults newly diagnosed with ADHD and its field testing during the shared decision-maki…
Associations between health literacy and information-evaluation and decision-making skills in Japanese adults
Both information-evaluation and decision-making skills were associated with health literacy. However, these skills are not sufficiently widespread in Japan because there are few opportunities to acquire them. More research is needed to raise awareness of the importance of such skills for improving health literacy and providing learning opportunities
Genetic variants influencing obesity-related traits in Japanese population
Context: Adipose tissue is the main organ that stores energy and participates in adaptive thermogenesis of the human body. The adipose tissue content in an individual is determined by a combination of genetic factors and lifestyle related factors. While Japanese people, along with the closely related East Asians, are generally thinner than individuals of European ancestry, they are prone to accumulating visceral adipose tissues. Genome-wide disco…
Development of the health literacy on social determinants of health questionnaire in Japanese adults
HL-SDHQ clarifies the relationship between the ten domains of the social determinants of health and health in each domain and is able to measure whether it is possible to access, understand, appraise, and apply related information. The reliability and validity of the scale were adequate
Comprehensive health literacy in Japan is lower than in Europe
This study translated a comprehensive health literacy questionnaire into Japanese and confirmed its reliability and validity. Comparative results suggest that Japanese health literacy is lower than that of Europeans. This discrepancy may be partly caused by inefficiency in the Japanese primary health care system. It is also difficult to access reliable and understandable health information in Japan, as there is no comprehensive national online pl…
Understanding the Human Genetics and Evolution
Variation of the melanocortin 1 receptor gene in the macaques
Melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), a G‐coupled seven‐transmembrane receptor protein, plays a key role in the regulation of melanin synthesis in mammals. Sequence variation of the MC1R gene ( MC1R ) has been associated with pigmentation phenotypes in humans and in several animal species. The macaques (genus Macaca ) are known to show a marked inter‐specific variation in coat color although the causative genetic variation remains unclear. We investiga…
Returning to the “Homeland
Ethnic discrimination appears to be a correlate of morbidity among Japanese Brazilian migrants. Future research should investigate how educational and workplace interventions may reduce discrimination and possibly improve health
Development of a short version of the sense of coherence scale for population survey
A three-item sense of coherence (SOC) scale was developed, incorporating the definitions of the three subordinate concepts of SOC for use in population surveys. A cross-sectional internet survey was conducted in the latter part of July 2006. Cronbach’s α was 0.84. The correlation coefficient of SOC-13 and the newly devised University of Tokyo Health Sociology version of the SOC Scale (SOC-3-UTHS) was 0.51. As regards correlation with a health ind…
