  • Body height, body weight and Body Mass Index on German conscripts

    U Jaeger, K Zellner et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2001•Citada por: 3

Surveys of conscripts give a chance to pursue the somatic development and the nourishment situation of young men over long times. At the beginning a historical view is given of the organization and methodological basis of medical examinations of German recruits since the introduction of the general conscription at the beginning of the 19th century. Secular changes of the body height are sketched out for selected regions of Germany until the middl…

  • Growth studies in Jena, Germany

    Open Access•Katrin Kromeyer-Hauschild, U Jaeger•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2000

Changes in sitting height, biacromial and bicristal breadths, and the acromio-cristal index in school children from Jena between 7 and 14 years of age are described. Additionally, a secular comparison of these measurements and the index was done, based on the long series of surveys available for schoolchildren in Jena. During childhood, sex differences in the dimensions and the index are usually slight, but with the onset of the adolescent spurt …

  • Ergebnisse der Untersuchung ausgewählter Kopfmaße bei Jenaer Kindern

    K Zellner, Katrin Kromeyer-Hauschild et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1999•Citada por: 1

Secular changes of head measurements (frontal breadth, bizygomatic breadth, bigonial breadth, auricular height, morphological facial height, lower face height) are analysed. The data are based on the Jena anthropological investigations of school children from 1975 and 1985. The inclusion of the data of the Jena longitudinal study carried out since 1985 allows an analysis of the further secular trend. Noticeable changes are proved in most of the a…

  • Are head dimensions influenced by environmental factors?

    U Jaeger, K Zellner et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1998

In the article the development of skull measurements and head measurements (length and breadth) and of the cephalic index, calculated from these measurements, since the Neolithic period are presented. The results obtained from the historical material are compared with those of living persons. The measurements as well of the skull as of the head show secular changes. The following general trend was found: an increase of body height is connected wi…

  • Growth studies in Jena, Germany

    Open Access•Katrin Kromeyer-Hauschild, U Jaeger•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1998

This report presents results of an anthropological investigation on Jena, Germany, schoolchildren from 1995. Stature and weight, body mass index (BMI), and four skinfolds (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac) are presented for children 7-14 years of age and are compared with results of investigations on schoolchildren carried out in Jena in 1975 and 1985. Between those years, in both sexes there were no significant differences in stature, we…

  • Secular trend in body height since the Neolithic period

    U Jaeger, H Bruchhaus et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1998•Citada por: 2

The body height of children and adults is estimated on the basis of skeleton material from the middle Elbe-Saale region since the Neolithic period. The men's body height was calculated according to Breitinger (1938), the women's body height according to Bach (1965), and the children's body height according to Telkkä et al. (1962). These estimates are compared with the mean body height of living persons from the adult population and of Jena school…

  • Growth studies in Jena, Germany

Open Access•K Zellner, Katrin Kromeyer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1996

Anthropological investigations have been performed on Jena school children since 1880. The report summarizes the background of the surveys and then considers secular changes in stature and body weight since 1880. The stature of Jena school children shows a major increase over 105 years, ranging from 9.7% to 12.8% in girls and from 9.4% to 14.6% in boys. Changes in estimated growth rates are evident, especially in the preschool ages. Corresponding…

  • Genetic serum protein markers (HP, TF, GC, PI) in three population samples from Thuringia (Germany); Jena, Erfurt and Suhl

Open Access•Hubert Walter, Gesa Rohwedder et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1993

Haptoglobin (HP), transferrin (TF), group specific component (GC) and protease inhibitor (PI) polymorphisms were studied in three population samples from Thuringia: Jena, n=204; Erfurt, n=213; Suhl, n=180. GC and in particular TF allele frequencies show some statistically significant distribution heterogeneity, whereas HP and PI allele frequencies do not show any remarkable distribution differences. The results are discussed and compared with tho…

    U Jaeger, K Zellner et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1990

The present report is based on the results from anthropological examinations on schoolchildren, which have been carried out in Jena since 1880. The introduction to the paper gives a survey on the goals of these inquiries, followed by remarks on secular changes in selected measurements of the body (body height, body weight, chest circumference). Besides the extent of the changes in these features, the anticipation of the pubertal growth period and…
