Distribution of surnames over the Alto Adige-Sudtirol region according to local geographic, historical and linguistic features
This paper aims at analysing the distribution of surnames over the Alto Adige-Südtirol, which is an Italian alpine sub-region coinciding with the province of Bolzano-Bozen. Two thirds of the Alto Adige-Südtirol inhabitants are German mother-tongue, whereas the remaining one third is Italian mother-tongue. There is also a minority represented by Ladin-speaking people. Analyses were carried out using a similarity index between different populations…
Similarities in the Surnames of Island and Continental Populations of the North-Western Mediterranean Area
This paper compares the structures of the surnames of 75 municipal populations living in six north-western Mediterranean regions. Its purpose is to unravel the relations between the local populations in Corsica and Sardinia and the links between these populations and those living in the Italian and French continental territory. On the basis of the matrix of similarity of surnames, some topological representations have been drafted showing the abo…
The shock of widowhood”? Evidence from an Italian population (Parma, 1989–2000)
Surname distributions and linguistic-cultural identities in the Alto Adige-Südtirol Area
In this survey we have carried out a comparison of the surname structures of the municipal populations living in the Alto Adige-Südtirol area, an Italian Alpine sub-region with a high number of German-speaking inhabitants. These analyses have been conducted by means of indeces of similarity among populations and the topological representations deriving from these; in addition, the concept of spatial autocorrelation has been applied to a certain n…
Variations in late-age mortality by household structure and marital status in Parma, Italy
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between household structure and mortality at older ages in Parma, Italy. The household is an important setting for older people's social roles and social relations and its composition has a strong association with their health. The study examines 57,830 people aged 65 or more years drawn from the population registers of Parma (Italy). Record linkage from 1989 to 2000 was carried out …
International migrations toward the city of Parma (Northern Italy)
The population of Parma can be considered a paradigm in order to describe the rapid demographic transformations characterizing Northern Italy communities, in which immigration flows play undoubtedly an important role. The present study uses data from the ‘Osservatorio Biodemografico’ (Biodemographic Observatory), a data bank set up in 1989 with the aim to analyze longitudinally the dynamics of that urban population. This data bank traces individu…
Distribution of surnames and linguistic-cultural identities of the Slovenian and German minorities of northeastern Italy
In this study we have compared the structure of surnames of Slovenian and German (Carinthian) minorities of northeastern Italy with other municipalities of the neighbourhood. The analysis has been carried out by using estimates of the similarities between populations and the topological representation obtained by them, as well as the spatial autocorrelation. On the whole, this research shows some distinctions which depend on the territorial geogr…
Brief communication
The extent of variation in the migratory movements that occurred in Sicily was evaluated using surname data taken from the telephone directories of the 390 communes of the island. The surname distribution of each commune was linearized by a log‐log transformation, and a significant fit to a linear regression model was found in almost all cases. Interestingly, the slope of the regression line appeared to be a sensitive indicator of the different l…
