  • Trends in Health Behavior of Polish Women in 1986–2021

    Open Access•Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

In the last 35 years Poland has undergone a series of fundamental economic, social, and biological transformations. With the transition from a centrally planned to a free-market economy, a period of economic and social transformation, Poland's accession to the European Union, and the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, living conditions in the country have seen dramatic changes. The aim of this study was to assess whether there were changes in the bas…

  • How Stress Is Related to Age, Education, Physical Activity, Body Mass Index, and Body Fat Percentage in Adult Polish Men

    Open Access•Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid, Przemysław Kupis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Stressful events and chronic tension are considered a burden and a threat to physical, mental, and social health. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the associations of variation in stress exposure with social factors, physical activity, basic components of physical fitness, body mass index (BMI) and percentage of body fat (BFP). An additional objective was to identify the main BFP modifiers among those analyzed. The material consisted of da…

  • Age, Education, and Stress Affect Ageing Males’ Symptoms More than Lifestyle Does

    Open Access•Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid, Halina Kołodziej et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

An increasing number of subjects are affected by health problems related to the advanced involutional processes. It is extremely important to identify the determinants of the rate of occurrence of physiological, psychological, and social manifestations of aging. The aim was to determine how factors such as lifestyle, level of education, or severity of stressful life events indicate the appearance of aging symptoms in adult men. The material consi…

  • Bone Mineral Density in Adolescent Boys

Open Access•Anna Kopiczko, Jakub Grzegorz Adamczyk et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Physical inactivity of children can be a precursor of reduced bone mineral density, considered to be a typical problem only in old age. The aim of this study was to evaluate bone mineral density in 96 Polish boys aged 14-17 years with varied physical activity (swimmers, track and field athletes, non-athletes) and the effect of bone composition, birth weight and breastfeeding during infancy on bone parameters. Anthropometric and body composition m…

  • Social class-specific secular trends in height among 19-year old Polish men

    Open Access•Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid, Halina Kołodziej et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2019

  • Bone mineral density, hand grip strength, smoking status and physical activity in Polish young men

Open Access•Anna Kopiczko, Karol Gryko et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2018

  • Life satisfaction as a health determinant among Polish adult population

    Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2018

LS scale can detect a group dissatisfied men and women from the general population with a higher risk of having poorer health parameters. Significant is not only a relationship between LS and physical health, but also a long-term influence of LS on biological condition, which may be an effect of some specific models of health behavior and/or a worse professional and social situation.

  • Secular trends in body height and body mass in 19‐year‐old polish men based on six national surveys from 1965 to 2010

Open Access•Halina Kołodziej, Monika Lopuszanska et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2015

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to determine whether an intergenerational trend toward increased stature is slowing down, and whether body weight has recently increased among young men in Poland, as it has in Western European countries. METHODS: Data were taken from six national surveys of 19-year-old Polish male conscripts from cohorts 1965, 1976, 1986, 1995, 2001, and 2010. RESULTS: The mean stature of this population increased throughout the last 45 y…

  • Self-reported versus measured body height and weight in Polish adult men

    Monika Lopuszanska, Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2015

BACKGROUND: In some epidemiological studies, self-reported height and weight are often used to save time and money. Self-reported height and weight are commonly used to assess the prevalence of obesity. The aim of this study was to assess the differences between self-reported and measured height and weight in adult men, and to determine how the accuracy of self-reported data depended on age and education. The prevalence of obesity was also calcul…

  • The negative health consequences of unemployment

    Open Access•ławomir M Kozieł, Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2010

  • Inter-Generation Social Mobility Modifies Framingham Risk Score in Polish Middle-Aged Men, but Not in Women

Open Access•Ewa A Jankowska, Alicja Szklarska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2008

In modern societies, there are regular social gradients in most health parameters, and also in the structure of morbidity and mortality. However, the significance of inter-generation social mobility for general health status still remains equivocal. This study was therefore performed in order to compare the effect of social mobility on coronary heart disease (CHD) risk between middle-aged Polish men and women. A total of 342 men and 458 women, ag…

  • Decrease in Sex Difference in Premature Mortality During System Transformation in Poland

Open Access•Halina Kołodziej, Monika Lopuszanska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2008

In recent years, sex differences in mortality have followed diverse patterns of change in developed countries. As there is no analogous evidence from Poland, the aim of this study was to describe the pattern of change in excess male mortality among Polish inhabitants aged 35–64 during 1995–2002, when the major socioeconomic transformation occurred, and compare it with sex differences in mortality observed in the late 1980s. During the study perio…

Open Access•Alicja Szklarska, A Lipowicz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2008

In the present study, we estimated differences in health status between migrant (those who had come to Wrocław at the age of ≥16 years) and nonmigrant (those who had lived in Wrocław since birth or had come with their parents) inhabitants of Wrocław, Poland. Three hundred and sixty seven males and 496 females aged 40 …

  • Social inequality in premature mortality among polish urban adults during economic transition

Open Access•Halina Kołodziej, Monika Lopuszanska et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2007

Rates of premature mortality among adults are important measures of the economic and psychosocial well‐being of human populations. In many countries, such rates are, as a rule, inversely related to the level of attained education. We examined changes in educational group‐specific mortality rates among urban adults in Poland during the country's rapid transition in the 1990s from a socialist command economy to a free market system. Two census‐base…

The aims of the study were the following: (1) An evaluation of which factor, aging itself or the occurence of menopause, revealed a more detrimental effect on bone mineral content (BMC) of healthy women; (2) An assesment of influence of other factors (the menarcheal age, the total number of reproductive years and the lenght of the period after menopause) on BMC. Our sample material comprised a group of 928 healthy females (715 pre- and 213 postme…
