  • Genetic landscape of the Hvar Island - highlight of a 50-year long bioanthropological research

Jelena Šarac, Dubravka Havaš Auguštin et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2022

The paper presents an overview of the 50-year long bioanthropological research of the Hvar islanders and depicts the maternal and paternal genetic landscape of the Hvar population (mtDNA and NRY lineages) in more detail. MtDNA haplogroups were determined in 169 and NRY haplogroups in 407 autochthonous individuals from the Hvar Island. The relatively high level of diversity of mtDNA and NRY lineages has been observed, however with interesting devi…

  • Austro-Hungarian heritage and tourism discourses in Pula, Croatia

Anja Iveković Martinis, Anita Sujoldžić•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism and Cultural…•2020•References: 2

The paper analyses visual and textual representations of Austro-Hungarian heritage on the website of the tourist board of the town of Pula (Croatia), in the north-eastern Adriatic region of Istria, and the role of this heritage as a symbolic resource for constructing a tourist-oriented urban identity. Analysing the way heritage is represented and mobilised in tourist-oriented discourses can reveal certain ideological positions related to local, r…

  • A European project on health problems, mental disorders and cross-cultural aspects of developing effective rehabilitation procedures for refugee and immigrant youth

Open Access•Anita Sujoldžić, Amelia De Lucia et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•References: 4

The present paper describes the conceptual framework, rationale and methods of an international comparative study on risk and protective factors of adolescent health and well-being, with particular focus on youth with immigrant (or refugee) experience. This is a comprehensive study on the quality of life and health outcomes of adolescent youth that looks at group-specific differences within different socio-cultural contexts across six European co…

  • Adjustment of adolescent refugees in Croatia

    Open Access•Anita Sujoldžić•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The cultural similarity of Bosnian refugees in Croatian Society and their fluency in the Croatian language make it difficult to grasp the reality of complex social relations integral to the community of Bosnians in Croatia. The study focuses on adolescent refugees, a particularly vulnerable population, who face a double challenge in integrating past traumas and defining a new identity within and between the two cultures. School as an educational …

  • Sets of complementary phenotypic relationships across five isolated populations: Traces of expression of different gene complexes

Open Access•Igor Rudan, Pavao Rudan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999•References: 2

The aim of this study is to search for certain repeating phenotypic patterns, i.e. sets of complementary relationships across five isolated populations, which may represent the traces of expression of different genes or gene complexes. The study was conducted among isolates of five island populations of eastern Adriatic, Croatia, and the data were collected between 1979 and 1990. Selected phenotypic characteristics included measures of biological…

  • Genetics, ethnohistory, and linguistics of Brač, Yugoslavia

Open Access•Stephen L Zegura, Branka Janićijević et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1991

Serogenetic data involving 21 genetic systems were collected from 12 villages on the island of Brač (Yugoslavia) in 1987. Maximum sample size was 709 individuals. The UPGMA dendrogram based on genetic distances was readily interpretable within the contexts of village settlement history, social relationships, and sample size considerations. The gene diversity value (H = 0.3029 ± 0.0119) was both quite high and extremely similar to the average hete…

  • Migration within the island of Korčula, Yugoslavia

Open Access•Anita Sujoldžić, Verica Jovanović et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1989

For several centuries the village populations on the Yugoslav island of Korcula have remained essentially isolated from each other and from the mainland. Historical, linguistic and biological data indicate that systematic population pressure predominantly came from the coastal area of the Balkan peninsula westward onto the island. To examine short and long range migration on the island, data on the place of birth of parents of adult inhabitants (…

  • Isolation by distance in Middle Dalmatia—Yugoslavia

Open Access•Pavao Rudan, Diana Šimić et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1987•Cited by: 8•References: 27

Parameters of Malécot's isolation‐by‐distance model are estimated for biological (anthropometric head and body dimensions, morphometric dimensions of metacarpal bones, quantitative and qualitative dermatoglyphic traits, and physiological/cardiorespiratory/variables) and linguistic distances and migrational kinship on the island of Korčula and the Pelješac peninsula in Middle Dalmatia, Croatia, Yugoslavia. Resulting parameters and the fit of the m…
