  • Age-related changes in the endocranial capacity and surface area of ancient children from the Zaghunluq Cemetery (650-150 BCE) in Xinjiang, Northwestern China

Haijun Li, Jing Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2024

Early childhood is an important period for the rapid growth of the brain, which is crucial to neural connection and cognitive development. The purpose of this study is to characterize the age changes of endocasts in ancient children in Northwestern China (2600-2100 BP) to enrich our understanding of brain growth. 28 crania of ancient children excavated from the Zaghunluq cemetery were analyzed using endocasts generated from CT images. The endocas…

  • Doing the Work—or Not

Open Access•Caitlin Jade Esparza, Mark Simon et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

While the number of positions, committees, and projects described as “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)” work has grown rapidly in recent years, there has been little attention to the theory, praxis, or lived experience of this work. In this perspective, we briefly summarize the research and concepts put forth by DEI leaders in higher education more broadly, followed by an analysis of the literature's application to academic medicine. We the…

  • Musical practice as a ritual of resistance in (post)-migratory situation

    Open Access•Mark Simon, M-F Simon•ARTICLE•Sociology of power•2017

The article is dedicated to Afro-Caribbean musical rituals as a form of response to exclusion from public sphere. The author claims that there are two key features of black music (in all the diversity of its genres): a) participatory character; b) dualism, manifested in a combination of a cheerful form and tragic content, hidden from an external observer. Starting from this thesis, the author places Notting Hill Carnival as a key chronotope of th…

  • Cognitive Heuristics and Entrepreneurial Action

    Open Access•Mark Simon•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

Researchers have begun to explore the relationship between cognitive heuristics and entrepreneurial action. Individuals utilize these heuristics because their cognitive capacity is limited, so they can neither comprehensively search for nor accurately interpret information. Instead, individuals may apply a rule of thumb that systematically violates the rules of probability and may lead to deviations from normatively derived answers. Importantly, …

  • Life and Death Decisions

    Deborah P Waldrop, Judith Tamburlin et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Public education that encourages family discussions about organ and tissue donation can enhance understanding, facilitate a donor's wishes and increase the numbers of donations. Action research methods were used to explore the impact of a student-initiated family discussion about donation. Most discussions were positive; only 7% middle school and 4% high school participants described them as "terrible." "Getting it started" was the most difficult…

  • Cognitive biases, risk perception, and venture formation

Open Access•Mark Simon, Susan M Houghton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Venturing•2000

  • Septal apertures in the humerus of normal and experimental rats

Open Access•Alphonse Riesenfeld, Mark Simon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1975•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Septal apertures of the humerus are rare in wild and domesticated rats but their occurrence is more frequent in females than in males and on the left than on the right side. Septal apertures can be produced experimentally by hypophysectomy due to an extreme reduction of the thickness of the septal wall. Other endocrine ablations, starvation and unilateral front leg paralysis do not produce a sufficient reduction of septal wall thickness to cause …
