  • Persistent excess mortality in post-pandemic Japan

Open Access•Hiroshi Kusunoki, Ryota Sakai et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

More than six years after the emergence of COVID-19, Japan continues to experience persistently elevated excess mortality despite entering a post-pandemic phase. Excess mortality, defined as the difference between observed and expected deaths, reflects both direct and indirect effects of the pandemic, including healthcare disruption, delayed care, and broader social changes. In Japan, mortality decreased slightly in 2020 but increased markedly fr…

  • Age-specific patterns of all-cause mortality across Covid-19 booster dose groups in two Japanese municipalities

Open Access•Yasushi Iwamoto, Hiroshi Kusunoki et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background/purpose: COVID-19 mRNA vaccines have been reported to reduce severe COVID-19 outcomes in high-risk populations. In Japan, booster vaccinations up to the seventh dose are publicly funded; however, evidence regarding the safety and potential benefits of repeated booster doses in younger adults remains limited. This exploratory observational study aimed to describe age-specific patterns of all-cause mortality according to the number of CO…

    Open Access•Yumi Watanabe•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Consciousness•2025•References: 47

Healers of the Shipibo, known as onayas, reside in Eastern Peru and build relationships with plant spirits through dreams seen during a training process called samá. Since they comprehend the process of building relationships with plant spirits by interpreting their dreams, dream interpretation serves as the medium through which the onayas learn how to build relationships with plant spirits, ultimately acquiring the healing capacity to aid others…

  • Education, household income, and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Japanese adults

Open Access•Aya Hinata, Keiko Kabasawa et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Both education and household income levels are independently associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms, with household income levels showing a more robust association with depressive symptoms than education levels. This suggests that a high household income level may offset the risk of depressive symptoms from having a low education level

  • Two kinds of feng-shui history in Japan

    Open Access•Yumi Watanabe, Yoshio Watanabe•ARTICLE•Estudos Japoneses•2015

In this paper, I don’tuse the word of “geomancy” but use “feng-shui”, as meaning a set of method and concept for an assessment for environmental impact against human life. Environmental impact assessment, connected with the feng-shui theory of later eras, first began with xiang-zhai (house and community observation), which appeared in the Zhou Period (770~256 BC.), Spring and Autumn/Warring States Periods(770~221 BC.) in China. Now I recognize th…
