Smart cities and their influence on income growth: The case of Africa
Despite rapid urbanization and the adoption of smart city (SC) initiatives, the economic benefits for the population have been limited in Africa. This study aims to examine the effect of “core” elements of Smart Cities, such as Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), in the growth of GDP per capita in a set of 78 cities in Africa. The methodology employs a Probit model with instrumental variables (IV-Probit) to correct for endogeneity p…
East Harlem’s Asthma Counselor Program During Covid: Maintaining Service Continuity and Understanding Family Needs in a Community-Based Child Asthma Management Program
Little is known about how child asthma management programs, and their participants, fared during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We describe the primary modifications made to a child asthma management program in East Harlem, NYC, to maintain service continuity during this time. Two questions guide our analysis: 1) To what extent did the program's primary service delivery activities change between the year before the pandemic and the pand…
Los cuidados como determinante de la no migración de las mujeres
International migration offers benefits for women. However, the feminization of care work, driven by gender social norms, acts as a barrier to their mobility. The paper analyzes how caregiving responsibilities in households with male migration in Mexico limit women’s ability to migrate. Using a quantitative approach, it applies a probit model with instrumental variable regression and data from ENADID 2023 to assess the impact of caregiving on fem…
Effects of corruption on human development. Evidence for developed and developing countries
The aim of the paper is to determine the effect of corruption, using human development index (HDI), and its sub-indices: education, life expectancy and gross national income in 135 developed and developing countries over the period of 2005–2021. A dynamic estimation (sys-GMM) method was employed and the transformation of Prais-Winsten with corrected standard errors for correlated panels (PCSE) and GMM were used for robustness check. The findings …

The data on extreme wealth is taken from Forbes annual listing of billionaires. The main findings are highly supportive of the idea that corruption fosters extreme we…

El análisis considera 18 actividades económicas en México durante 2018. Se encuentra, mediante estimaciones de corte tran…
