  • Interpretations of Emanuel Swedenborg’s image of the afterlife in the novel Oneiron by Laura Lindstedt

    Open Access•Tiina Mahlamäki, Tomas Mansikka•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•2020

This article discusses the relationship between Western esotericism and literature. As an example of a secular author who uses and benefits from esoteric texts, ideas and thoughts as resources in creating a literary artwork, the article analyses Laura Lindstedt’s novel Oneiron. A Fantasy About the Seconds After Death (2015). It contextualises the novel within the frames of Western esotericism and literature, focusing on Emanuel Swedenborg’s impac…

The current 29th volume of Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis is based on a symposium arranged by the Donner Institute and the research project ‘Seekers of the New: Esotericism and the Transformation of Religiosity in the Modernising Finland’ at the University of Turku in June 2017, under the title: ‘Approaching Esotericism and Mysticism: Cultural Influences’. • The history of modern Western esotericism

    Open Access•Tiina Mahlamäki, Maarit Leskelä-Kärki•ARTICLE•Approaching Religion•2018

The study of Western esoteric traditions and practices has been a growing research field since the 1990s. This thematic issue aims at opening this field particularly in the context of Finnish cultural history, although the articles cover also other parts of the long tradition of Western esotericism in the history of Europe

  • A relation of Swedenborgianism and anthroposophy

    Open Access•Tiina Mahlamäki•ARTICLE•Approaching Religion•2018

My article discusses the influence of Emanuel- Swedenborg on a Finnish female author, Kersti Bergroth (1886-1975) through one of Bergroth's novels Eläviä ja kuolleita ('The Living and the Dead', 1945). Bergroth was a prolific author with an anthroposophical bent, and an admirer of German idealism. In this particular novel Bergroth refers explicitly to Swedenborg and the story discloses a number of Swedenborgian themes: the doctrine of corresponde…

  • Religion and atheism from a gender perspective

    Open Access•Tiina Mahlamäki•ARTICLE•Approaching Religion•2012•Cited by: 8

In August 2010 the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE, summarising the results of the World Values 2005 survey, released them under the headline 'Religion is a women's issue'. Is atheism and secularity then, by contrast, an issue for men? It is tempting to answer the question positively when one looks at the names of the new atheist bestselling authors, or the names in the index lists in the back pages of books with reference to atheism, as well as…

  • Remarks on Swedenborgian Elements in the Literary Production of Johan Ludvig Runeberg

    Open Access•Tiina Mahlamäki, Tomas Mansikka•ARTICLE•Temenos - Nordic Journal for the…•2010•References: 2

This article sets out to trace possible influences of Emanuel Swedenborg, the Swedish theosophist and spirit-seer, in the production of the Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. We argue that the influence of Swedenborgianism on nineteenth-century culture in Finland was greater than has generally been suggested by literary scholars. The first part of the article provides a historical background of Swedenborgianism in the country. The latte…
