  • Enhancing resiliency and optimizing readiness in military personnel through psychological flexibility training

    Open Access•Alan L Peterson, Brian A Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

This study will evaluate the efficacy of a two-day training program based on ACT for fostering psychological flexibility, the central target in ACT, for enhancing resiliency, and for preventing the development of psychological health symptoms. The research participants will be a non-clinical population of active duty military personnel ( N = 600). The ACT-based training program ( n = 300) will be compared to a military resiliency training as usua…

  • LGB Service Members’ Relationship Status, Satisfaction, and Well-Being

    Open Access•Elizabeth N Savarese, Jessica Collazo et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2023•References: 30

Recently, the legal landscape for sexual minorities in the United States has changed dramatically, prompting empirical research on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) couples and LGB service members. This study examined the relationship characteristics and mental health of LGB service members in couple relationships and compared partnered and single LGB service members. A total of 238 LGB service members completed an anonymous survey, including ques…

  • Cultivating psychological flexibility to address religious and spiritual suffering in moral injury

Lauren M Borges, Sean M Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Care Chaplaincy•2022

In the current paper, we aim to expand the dialogue about applying psychological flexibility processes to moral injury-related spiritual suffering using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Psychological flexibility is the process of practicing present moment awareness and openness to experiences of emotions and thoughts, while also choosing to engage in actions that are consistent with one's values. This open, aware, and engaged approach to …

  • A trauma-focused intensive outpatient program integrating elements of exposure therapy with acceptance and commitment therapy

Open Access•Melissa W Ramirez, Craig Woodworth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contextual Behavioral…•2021

  • Temporary PTSD symptom increases among individuals receiving CPT in a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial

    Sadie E Larsen, Margaret‐Anne Mackintosh et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2020

The rates of symptom increases, which were higher than in previous studies, may be attributed to a routine care sample or to the differences in session timing and measurement. These results add to a nascent literature documenting that symptom increases may be a normal, transient part of treatment that do not impact a patient's ability to have symptom improvement during a course of CPT. • Launching a Competency-Based Training Program in Evidence-Based Treatments for PTSD

    Open Access•Katherine A Dondanville, Brooke A Fina et al.•ARTICLE•Community Mental Health Journal•2020•References: 46

  • Military Service Members' Satisfaction With Outness

    Open Access•Wyatt R Evans, Sebastian J Bli et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 24

This study is among the first examining lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) service members in the United States following the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy repeal. Higher levels of outness predict better mental health among general LGB populations. The military environment, like other traditional/conservative settings, may alter this relation; however, no data are available on outness among LGB service members in the United States. We examined 236…

  • A functional approach to understanding and treating military-related moral injury

    Open Access•Jacob K Farnsworth, Kent D Drescher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contextual Behavioral…•2017

  • Morally injurious events and psychological distress among veterans

Wyatt R Evans, Melinda A Stanley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2017

These findings advance the evolving theoretical framework of moral injury, elucidating the salience of r/s struggles in the development of distress. Implications for moral injury intervention call for attention to potential dissonance between actions (witnessed or perpetrated) and r/s underpinnings of the individual's moral framework.
