Mental illness, violence risk, and race in juvenile detention
Disproportionate minority contact (DMC) is a pervasive problem throughout the juvenile justice system. This article explored whether mental illness may be an explanatory factor in DMC. Data such as measures of violence risk and symptoms of mental illness were taken from intake interviews with 482 detained youth in Connecticut. Results indicated that racial minorities in detention have significantly lower violence risk than Caucasians but are disp…

The Domestic Violence Home Visit Intervention (DVHVI) provides advocate/police officer team home visits following a domestic dispute. Women (52 DVHVI and 55 controls) were interviewed at 1, 6, and 12 months following a police reported domestic incident to assess repeat violence, service utilization, and symptoms. Women who received the DVHVI were more satisfied with the police and likely to call them to report a nonphysical domestic dispute in th…

Risk of Incarceration among Male Veterans and Nonveterans
In this study, we used data from national surveys of U.S. veterans and nonveterans to investigate whether military service increased risk for incarceration compared to non-veteran peers. White veterans aged thirty-five to fifty-four (early years of the All Volunteer Force and the Vietnam era) were at higher risk for incarceration than white nonveterans. Black and Hispanic veterans of these eras were generally at lower risk of incarceration than a…

The Role of Psychiatric Diagnosis in Satisfaction With Primary Care
BACKGROUND: Although patient satisfaction is widely used as a quality indicator, most such measures do not account for patient subgroups such as those with psychiatric illness. There is also very little data on satisfaction of psychiatric patients with their medical care. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the role of psychiatric illness in satisfaction with outpatient primary care services in the Department of Veterans Affairs …
