Manning Levels, Organizational Effectiveness, and Health
The relationships of manning levels to division performance ratings and illness and injury rates were investigated aboard 18 U.S. Navy ships (N = 1,634). Sources of variance in crew members' ratings of adequacy of manning were analyzed at the individual level, and specific components of this variance were used to predict ratings of performance and the illness criteria at the division (work group) level. A scale measuring efficiency of manpower ut…
Alcoholism in the United States Navy
Health status of drug abusers as measured by the cornell medical index
The Association between Alcoholism and Job Type in the U.S. Navy
Analysis of job types among U.S. Navy enlisted men hospitalized for alcoholism revealed a group of nine jobs with a high prevalence of alcoholism and nine jobs with a low prevalence. The former were mostly nontechnical jobs; the latter were skilled jobs requiring more education and higher aptitude
Deaths among Young Alcoholics in the U.S. Naval Service
The annual death rate of Navy and Marine Corps alcoholics was 15 per 1000 hospitalized alcoholics. The mean ages of the deceased were 37 and 33 years. The major causes of death were self-inflicted wounds, accidents and liver cirrhosis and pancreatitis
Perceptions of drug abuse risks in relation to type of drug used and level of experience
Pre-service drug abuse: Family and social history characteristics

Clustering 34 Occupational Groups By Personality Dimensions
Status Congruency and Mental Health
This study evaluated a status-congruency model in relationship to effective military performance after psychiatric contact and compared the status-congruency score distributions for psychiatric outpatients with those for non-psychiatric controls. The congruency scores contributed uniquely to the prediction of post-outpatient-contact performance, accounting for a significant amount of the criterion variance beyond a linear combination of its compo…
Work assignment and disposition in an industrial setting
A drug involvement scale for classification of drug abusers
Organizational Factors and Health Status
Data about 4,586 enlisted crew members aboard six combat ships confirmed an hypothesis that prediction of illness would increase significantly by considering organization or ship. Organizational variance was significant in predicting individual and group illness rates, and the single most effective predictor of individual illness rates was an individual's assigned ship. While further research is needed to determine particular organizational chara…

Life Stress and Illness Patterns in the US Navy: VI. Environmental, Demographic, and Prior Life Change Variables in Relation to Illness Onset in Naval Aviators During A Combat Cruise
Patterns of illness occurrence were examined in naval aviators flying combat missions from an aircraft carrier during a 6-month deployment to Vietnam. Demographic and symptom questionnaires were administered at the beginning of the cruise, and the cruise activities, work assignments and the illnesses developed by the aviators during the cruise were tabulated. The mean illness rate varied with operational conditions and personnel characteristics. …
Psychologic Correlates of Serum Cholesterol in Man: A Longitudinal Study
Correlations between serum cholesterol levels and self-reported intensities of various moods and feelings--namely, motivation, arousal, happiness, depression, anger, fear and lethargy--were investigated in 20 subjects over a 2-month period. Consistent and occasionally significant negative correlations were seen between subjects' serum cholesterol levels and their moods and feelings of motivation, arousal and happiness. Consistent and more frequen…
Life Status and Interpersonal Values
Body Size, Self-Evaluation, and Military Effectiveness
In a population on young, healthy Navy men dissatisfaction with height and weight varied directly with deviation from preferred (ideal) height and weight. Dissatisfaction with intellectual level generally varied inversely with intelligence, although within a wide range of GCT scores no relationship was present. Height appeared to have a pervasive effect upon self evaluations generally. ShortUnderweight and Short-Overweight groups had the most unf…
