  • The rise and fall of school integration in Israel: Research and policy analysis

    Open Access•Nura Resh, Yechezkel Dar•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 51

School integration (desegregation) was introduced in Israeli junior high schools in 1968 with the aim of increasing educational equality and decreasing (Jewish) ethnic divides. While never officially abandoned, a de facto retreat from this policy has been observed since the early 1990s, despite the voluminous research that revealed its positive, though moderate, educational outcomes. This shift in educational emphases reflected profound societal …

  • Youth in the Military: Gendered Experiences in the Conscript Service in the Israeli Army

    Open Access•Yechezkel Dar, Shaul Kimhi•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Conscript military service is a pivotal experience for young Israelis of both genders. Juxtaposing conflicting claims concerning women's military experience-the women's marginalization claim and the youth moratorial self-enhancing claim-we compare men's and women's retrospective evaluations of six aspects of their service in the Israeli army: hardship, adaptation, motivation, investment, service significance, and personal benefits. Military servi…

  • "Spheres of Justice" in the Israeli Kibbutz and Urban Sectors: Adolescents' Views

    Yechezkel Dar, Clara Sabbagh•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2002•References: 8

The current study suggests that, in order to enhance our understanding of the dynamics of the "local" system of distributive justice in the Israeli kibbutz, we need to examine its links to the broader society and its correspondent conceptions of justice. Following the notion of "spheres of justice" and using data gathered in 1986, prior to the accelerated de-communalization of the kibbutz, these dynamics are examined by comparing the social justi…

  • Communality, Rationalization and Distributive Justice: Changing Evaluation of Work in the Israeli Kibbutz

    Open Access•Yechezkel Dar•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2002•References: 14

A utopian outlook in the earlier kibbutz has sustained symbolic criteria in the evaluation of work. However, a process of rationalization has enhanced the instrumental importance of work and stimulated individualistic self-fulfilment. Facilitated by changing conceptions of distributive justice, social evaluation of work has become both more materialistic and more differentiated. The increasing praise of talents and of the market value of work out…

  • Exploring the multifaceted structure of sense of deprivation

    Open Access•Yechezkel Dar, Nura Resh•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2001•Cited by: 15•References: 58

Drawing from both social justice and deprivation research, we conceptualize expressions of sense of deprivation (equated with sense of injustice) as a three‐faceted structure defined by mode of experience, social reward, and social sphere of allocation. To empirically verify the fit between this conceptual structure and the actual configuration of people's deprivation reactions, we use a research model of two modes of experience (cognition and em…

  • The Imprint of the Int fad: Response of Kibbutz-Born Soldiers to Military Service in the West Bank and Gaza

    Open Access•Yechezkel Dar, Shaul Kimhi et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2000•Cited by: 3

Israel Army veterans of kibbutz background who had served in the occupied territories during the Intifada were retrospectively asked how this service affected them. Some common themes were disclosed. Service in the territories deepened understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but increased fear and hate of Arabs. These feelings did not lead to a national extremism, but rather to a rationalistic position demanding a peaceful, political so…

  • Perceiving Social Cleavages and Inequalities: The Case of Israeli Adolescents

    Open Access•Yechezkel Dar, Rachel Erhard et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 27

Analyses of perceptions of social cleavages and inequality among junior high school students indicated the ability of young adolescents to accurately apprehend a multifaceted social structure. A perception of a fairly conflictual social map of a considerable level of inequality was revealed, but within a conception of a well-differentiated social structure. Ethnic cleavage and inequality appeared least prominent among the cleavages and inequaliti…
