Behavioral Methods in Community Settings
Handbook of Methodological Approaches to Community-Based Research
"The field of community psychology has focused on individuals' and groups' behavior in interaction with their social contexts, with an emphasis on prevention, early intervention, wellness promotion, and competency development. Over the past few decades, however, community-based applications of the newest research methodologies have not kept pace with the development of theory and methodology with regard to multilevel data collection and analysis.…
The relationship between religiosity/spirituality and well-being in gay and heterosexual Orthodox Jews
Numerous studies have demonstrated positive relationships between religiosity/spirituality and emotional well-being. Little research exists, though, on these relationships in Orthodox Jewish and gay populations. Therefore, data from two studies focusing on heterosexual Orthodox Jews (Study 1, 52 females, 18 males) and gay Orthodox Jews (Study 2, 191 males) are presented. The studies assessed religiosity, spirituality, and well-being using validat…
The Relationship of Religious and General Coping to Psychological Adjustment and Distress in Urban Adolescents
The relationship of religious coping and spirituality to adjustment and psychological distress in urban early adolescents
The present study explored the relation of religious coping and spirituality to adjustment and psychological distress in urban early adolescents. The participants were 76 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students attending Catholic day schools in the New York City area. They completed a set of self-report measures assessing religious coping, daily spiritual experiences, positive and negative affect, life satisfaction, and psychological distress…

This study explores the applicability of prochaska's (prochaska & diclemente, 1992) stages of change model to the jewish conversion process and investigates the validity of a measure, the stages of change questionnaire-jewish conversion (socq-jc), created to examine jewish conversion according to that model. Factor analysis of the socq-jc with a sample of 141 volunteers indicated 3 factors corresponding to 3 stages of the model and a fourth facto…
An Interactional Approach to Attributional Dimensions in Dysphoria
To investigate the possible contributions to dysphoria of interactions among attributional dimensions, 105 freshmen and sophomores were administered the Attributional Style Questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory. Analyses examined the relationship to dysphoria of (a) the traditional composite score; (b) multiple regression analyses including interactions among the various dimensions; and (c) indices of behavioral self-blame, characterolo…
Peer Relations and Behaviors of Adoptive Children in Residential Treatment
This study explored the peer relationships and behaviors of 17 adoptive children in a residential treatment center. Compared to a group of 17 nonadoptive children, the youngsters tended to be rejected more by peers and to be perceived as having greater attentional difficulties by child-care workers

Outcome in psychoeducational day school programs
Psychoeducational day schools provide clinical and special education services to children with severe behavior disorders. Outcome studies indicate that treated children tend to improve in behavioral, academic, and family functioning but warrant continued intervention. Family therapy, development of academic skills, and coordination of aftercare services appear critical to long-term program success
Behavioral community psychology
An overview of this special issue, and of behavioral community psychology, is provided, beginning with a summary of terminology and history. Five dimensions on which behavioral community interventions may be classified are then described: (a) subject matter/target behavior, (b) behavioral procedures used, (c) experimental design, (d) intervention level, and (e) time focus. The studies composing this special issue serve as illustrations of these d…

Cognitive Impulsivity and Social Status in Predelinquent Preadolescent Males
The relationship between cognitive impulsivity, as measured by Kagan's Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFF), and interpersonal popularity was investigated in a sample of 42 “predelinquent” preadolescent boys in a residential setting. Predictions that the relationship would vary with the specific sociometric situations sampled were generally not confirmed. In fact, both the latency and errors dimensions of the MFF proved to have comparatively litt…
Urban and rural perspectives towards traditional and community-oriented mental health services in the schools
Urban and rural school mental health personnel's attitudes towards potential community mental health services were assessed by a 20-item questionnaire tapping both traditional clinical and community-oriented activities. Both groups rated traditional services more highly than community ones, but urban respondents were more receptive than rural ones to the community approach. Implications for community psychology and service delivery in the schools…
