  • Azerbaijan's Prospects in Nagorno-Karabakh with the End of Oil Boom

    Alec Rasizade•ARTICLE•Iran and the Caucasus•2011

Modern Azerbaijan is a typical Middle-Eastern petrostate ruled by a classical Middle-Eastern despotia, where political (and economic) power is concentrated and inherited within the ruling Family. Since the death of Heydar Aliev in 2003, tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan took a turn for the worse when his son, the new Azeri president Ilham Aliev, threatened to resort to force to take Nagorno-Karabakh back. Azerbaijan's recent military compac…

    Open Access•Alec Rasizade•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This essay points to the historical analogies between the contemporary stage in the Russian political evolution and the classical post-revolutionary periods in the French and Soviet history, known as Thermidorian Reaction. Given the obvious similarity to the well-studied Bonapartism and Stalinism, it is easier to understand the policies of Putin’s regime and predict its further development. By characterizing this period as the Russian Revanchism …

  • Azerbaijan after Heydar Aliev

    Open Access•Alec Rasizade•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2004

The 15 October 2003 presidential election went down in the history of Azerbaijan as a turning point for three reasons. First, it provided a legitimacy for the transfer of power from ailing President Heydar Aliev to his son Ilham. Second, it demonstrated the unwillingness of the so-called “international community” to risk jeopardizing geostrategic and economic interests by unequivocally condemning blatant falsification of the ballot. And, third, b…

    Open Access•Alec Rasizade•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 1

After the demise of the USSR, Azerbaijan has been relegated to the category of a third world nation. The short-lived euphoria of independence has been replaced by the somber realization that the so-called “transition period” from communism to capitalism could extend well beyond most people’s lifetimes. The principal outcome of the first decade of Azeri independence is that the country has moved backward rather than forward since the beginning of …
